Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Just wondering when do you like to bring the house? Passing situations, run situations, when you have better cover guys than they got WRs, to make teams throw hot? Just trying to learn and get better?
I am not a big blitz guy, but much prefer man (bump & run) to any zone scheme going. I do like to send the house when we have them pinned back deep, when it is an obvious passing situation, when it is imperative that we stop a first down attempt, etc. Basically when the situation calls for it! Sure, we will blitz at other times as well, just to keep them guessing. I ALWAYS WILL TRY THEM EARLY ON IN THE GAME TO SEE IF THEY CAN PICK UP THE BLITZ EFFECTIVELY OR NOT. IF THEY CAN'T, THEN WE ARE GOING TO BLITZ THEM ALL NIGHT LONG. Just my way as always.

I am not a big blitz guy either. I determine when to blitz by game plan. Of course I like to blitz, I just want to do it on my terms and when I feel we can get an advantage. How a team pass protects, determines our pressures.
I have lived with that saying all my coaching carrer and believe it to be the gospel! If a team can'tstop the blitz, then ride it to death! But, if they can, you had better back off because sooner or later( usually it is sooner) they are going to burn your fanny!

Early in my career I was a very big blitz guy. I'd send the troops in any situation. It took losing a game that we could have (not necessarily should have) won, but didn't because we blitzed. We gave up three 50+yd runs for TD's that should have been simply long runs. That taught me the value of keeping someone in the middle of the field. Since then, we have taken an ATTACK/COVER philosophy. Based on what the offense does or the situation, we will have one call that is an aggesssive blitz call (ATTACK) and one call which is a safer (COVER) call. The safe call might be a line stunt or sending 1 LBor OLB and playing pure zone coverage.
Since our FS is usually the best athlete on our defense, I like to keep him in the middle of the field as much as possible.
We will send 6 or 7 and play man (no one in middle), but we will pick and choose our spots; we will not do this every down. We will overload if scouting tells us there is a definite tendency to run/pass to a specific area, but again, it will not be every down.
Your philosophy and mine on this issue pretty much conincide. Would offer one suggestion, take it or leave it. I know you said you don't do this often, but you do leave the MOF open at times. I am totally convinced that if your playing a QB worth his salt, he will make you pay for this sooner or later during the night, as any good QB coach has his QB's ready to ALWAYS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MOFO SITUATIONS.
I like your "safe cover" philosophy a great deal!!!

I like the blitz in almost all situations. Do it early to see how they respond and then mix it up with coverage...mix it with Jams, Man and Zone and throw them off. I do not always save it for 3rd and long...put it out there on first down to rattle the QB
Blitz on first down is good because if you can throw them for (let's say) a 2 yd loss - you create the "SIX YARD SITUATION" (they have to average 6 yds on 2nd & 3rd for a FIRST down!).
I think ANYONE involved in defense, WANTS to be aggressive (blitz).
The big thing is knowing when and why and not fall into a trap (common with heavy blitzing teams).
I have been able to wean myself from going blitz crazy by focussing more on speed pass rushers on the Dline and teaching run-thrus with run support out of zone. Anymore, I probably blitz 10% of the time now and when we do blitz, we are usually twisting, stunting, exchanging....but it's all predicating on ATTACKING PROTECTION and not just willy-nilly sending guys.
