I have a question on the Crazy Option. We are putting in the gun option this year with crazy as a part of our package. The way I have it drawn up right now, I am pulling our backside guard on the crazy. I was wondering how you guys that have run it feel about pulling the backside guard and wrapping up inside on the linebacker to free safety? Any thoughts that might help a coach new to this system?

Their is no need to pull the backside guard the key is to track the two inside linebackers, Crazy option is a primary play in our offense and one we have had a lot of success running. I named this play crazy option based upon keeping it as a triple option threat and to force defenses to make some real decisions on trying to defend it. Take the blocking scheme back side and away from the defending you read. Coach CAmpbell
Coach Campbell, Can you go into more detail about the blocking scheme? You are reading the playside end, correct? How do you look to block it? Do you run it to the TE, or just to the open side? Thanks,

I don't quite understand your answer to the question! Why not pull the backside guard as it gets you an extra blocker to the front side???
Because you are then teaching a completely different blocking scheme. when you run crazy with veer blocking you are getting a completely different looking play with the exact same blocking as your base scheme.
I guess i would say that if you can coach it up and be as good as you can with your base look, do it! But it works just as good with veer blocking.
When you say take the blocking scheme to the backside, are you refering to zone blocking away from the defender you are reading or am I missing your idea.
If you Run alot of Power with the Guard pulling then I would Pull the Guard. If your a Big Zone blocking team, keep it simple. Have your O-Line zone it and work up (track) to the LBs. You can have them Pass Set and then Zone if you desire. Make it easy for the "fat boys" up front!
Never saw your answer to my questionas to where you coach your Pirates? I worked with a team in Florida called the Pirates (Fernandina Beach High School). Was just curious as I thought you may be from there also.

With crazy option there is no need to pull the backside guard keep your zone scheme headed backside away from the EMLOS that you are reading playside. Quarterback will read the EMLOS for shovel or speed option. By not pulling the backside guard you can keet four lineman tracking two linebackers. Coach Campbell
