We would rather get the trey instead of the deuce. We would rather have our OG blocking the shade than our TE blocking a 5 with no help from the Tackle. That would be a good case when the tackle calling trey would alert the OG that he had the DT by himself. I asked Bill Cowher about this play on Friday and he told me they do not look at it like their blocking a man, they look at it like their blocking an area on the Power O.

p.148 of the Rams playbook has it in drawn against a 3, 5, 9 combination if thats what you see. Grimm doesnt really like calls from his tape, but our kids make calls to communicate between each other.

Let me give you the thinking of guys like Bugel, Hanifan, Grimm, etc. vs. a 3/5/9.

NOTE: You CAN "Duece" OR "Trey" (by game plan). It is shown in the Rams book as a "TREY", but notice that they cannot handle a "MIKE A-GAP RUN-THRU". Here is their thinking:

"Calling of Double teams start from the INSIDE/OUT". Thus - if there is a 3 & a 5 - it is SAFER to "Duece" it BECAUSE if you had a "Trey" call - the ON G would be alone vs the 3 tech., & COULDN'T COME OFF ON "MIKE A GAP RUN-THRU" like he can with a "DUECE"!!!!! NOTE: If the DT in an inside align on the ON G - THEN you can "TREY" BECAUSE the threat of "MIKE A GAP RUN-THRU is MINIMAL!

ALSO - since the RB is hitting downhill for trhe butt of the ON G - it is more important to get the VERTICAL DOUBLE TEAM on the DT than the DE!

Vs 3/5/9: O-Line splits are only 18", & the O-Line is OFF the ball as far as legal. Now if you "DUECE" the 3 technique - the down block of the TE on the 5 technique depends ENTIRELY on how the 5 technique is playing. It does not congest the play because if you successfully down block a man who is LESS than 18" away (from an OFF the ball position) you can quite often drive him inside (if he is attempting to penetrate, OR is closing down fast with the ON T on the "Duece"), or BACK VERTICALLY if he is a sits & reads!

DOWN BLOCK

PURPOSE: Stop penetration and prevent defender from escaping laterally by blocking him from outside-in.

1. Step with near foot – for far heel of opponent.
2. A.P. = the nose of your helmet for the near tip of his shoulder pad, hip, or belt buckle (belt buckle if expecting penetration; or hip if he’s fighting outside; or near tip of shoulder pad when you don’t know what he is going to do).
3. Strike – inside hand to chest (stops penetration) and outside hand to just above bicep.
4. Must control the near shoulder and keep a good base.
5. If penetrator:
- aim for belt buckle
- lift near shoulder

If reader: control near shoulder

If spinner: - work defender upfield
- control near shoulder

If he aligns off ball
- put ear on near hip and wall off



The WRAPPER can take it tight AROUND the TE's down block on the 5, & with the RB on his inside hip - it is not very far to go (just a few feet). You MUST NOT allow an "A GAP RUN-THRU" from Mike IF you "DUECE". If the LBer is deep & doesn't have a tendency to "run-thru" when there is a 1 or 2 technique (too hard & too risky vs a 3)- then you can go ahead & "TREY". I have used this since 1981, & all of the above thinking (originally from Bugel/Hanifan?Grimm) comes into play!

NOW - vs a 1/5/9 - "TREY" it!!!!! You do not worry about "washing the DE into the B gap" - it is a VERTICAL DOUBLE TEAM, taking the DE back into the flow of the LBers:

TECHNIQUES ON COUNTER

A) ALL DOUBLE TEAMS ON PLAYSIDE (TE & ON T = “TREY”; ON T & ON G = “DUECE”) – THESE ARE VERTICAL DOUBLE TEAMS:

OUTSIDE BLOCKER = FIRST STEP IS A FLAT LATERAL GAP STEP WITH YOUR INSIDE FOOT, KEEPING THE SHOULDERS SQUARE. YOUR SECOND STEP WITH YOUR OUTSIDE FOOT IS UPFIELD, GETTING HIP TO HIP WITH YOUR INSIDE TEAMMATE, AND PLACING YOUR INSIDE FOOT IN THE CROTCH OF THE DLM. STRIKE THE OUTSIDE BREASTPLATE OF THE DLM WITH THE HANDS. THINK OF BLOCKING THE DLM AND IF HE STAYS HEAD UP OR OUTSIDE SHOULDER OF YOUR INSIDE TEAMMATE, HE IS YOUR MAN – PERIOD! IF THE DLM DISAPPEARS INSIDE ACROSS THE FACE OF YOUR INSIDE TEAMMATE, GO TO THE SECOND LEVEL AND “BUILD THE WALL” TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE. IF YOU GET A SHOT AT THE PLAYSIDE Lber – TAKE IT, BUT DON’T VARY OFF COURSE TO CHASE THE PLAYSIDE Lber, BECAUSE THE BACKSIDE Lber IS THE MAN THAT KILLS THE PLAY (IF YOU HIT THE PLAYSIDE Lber AND START LOSING HIM – LET HIM GO, AND CONTINUE TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE). THIS IS A VERY “DISCIPLINED TECHNIQUE”. YOU AND YOUR INSIDE TEAMMATE ARE WORKING TOGETHER – BOTH YOU ARE BLOCKING GAP – UPSTREAM (FROM THE DLM TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE).

INSIDE BLOCKER = FIRST STEP IS A VERY SHORT & FLAT LATERAL GAP STEP WITH YOUR INSIDE FOOT KEEPING YOUR SHOULDERS SQUARE. YOUR SECOND STEP WITH YOUR OUTSIDE FOOT IS UPFIELD THRU THE CROTCH OF THE DLM, GETTING HIP TO HIP WITH YOUR OUTSIDE TEAMMATE. STRIKE THE INSIDE BREASTPLATE OF THE DLM WITH YOUR OUTSIDE HAND – OR BOTH HANDS (“GET A LITTLE BITE” TO HELP YOUR OUTSIDE TEAMMATE – TRY TO STAND THE DLM UP). YOUR EYES MUST GO IMMEDIATELY TO THE INSIDE AS YOU WORK UPFIELD TO “BUILD THE WALL” TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE (BE ALERT FOR PLAYSIDE Lber RUNNING THRU THE INSIDE GAP AS YOU GO FOR FIRST Lber OFFSIDE). IF THE DLM COMES INSIDE, YOU MUST LOCK ONTO HIM, AND YOUR OUTSIDE TEAMMATE WILL “BUILD THE WALL” AT THE SECOND LEVEL. YOU AND YOUR OUTSIDE TEAMMATE ARE WORKING TOGETHER – BOTH OF YOU ARE BLOCKING GAP – UPSTREAM (FROM THE DLM TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE).

NOTE: IF “GAP” CALL MADE PLAYSIDE – EVERYONE BLOCKING A DLM ALONE MUST GET A “BIGGER BITE” ON THE DLM (YOU MAY NEED TO DRIVE YOUR HELMET ACROSS IN FRONT OF HIM AND USE THE FAR SHOULDER IF HE IS A “PENETRATOR”).

You are more than welcome! REMEMBER: the "wrapper" is a "REAMER" - he can REAM OUT THE HOLE when things appear congested!

PS: ALSO remember that the RB "PRE-READS" the defense. NORMALLY - if the ON G is covered there is a "DUECE" & he hits to the butt of the ON G (BUT STAYING ON THE REAR HIP OF THE "WRAPPER"). If the ON G is uncovered - normally there will be a "TREY" & he can hit it a TAD wider to inside leg of ON T (still staying on the rear hip of the "wrapper"). The play is best when you get a VERTICAL DOUBDLE TEAM - & you run it OFF the double team, looking for cut from INSIDE/OUT!
