Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am attempting to shake up my high school offense with the gun option. We have been running a version of split back veer at this school for 20 years. This is my fifth year as head coach and I want to move full time to gun option. The time is right to make a change. I'd like to tap into the minds out there and hear some arguments about which to go to, the GUN or the PISTOL. Coach Campbell impressed my staff with his gun package. However we have another coach coming to see us (Golla) that runs the pistol. Would the pistol be an easier adjustment (no drop step for the running backs) beacause we used to run veer? Does it matter? If you were moving back from under the center, which one would you run and why?
Coach, We are putting in the pistol. The little we have in has looked good in spring practice so far. Trying to find more in print on it but haven't had much luck. Just adapting what I have seen on game film for Nevada and incorporating some plays we have already been running. We are still putting in an "Under Center" offense as well in case things don't go as well as hoped.
If you have anything to share or come across anything, I would love to see it. Thanks and good luck.
The pistol is a different look for the shotgun formation. Instead of having the back line up to the side of the QB in the traditional shotgun look they line up behind the QB. The QB is at about 4 yards and the back is at about 7. It got a lot more popular when people saw Nevada run it in their bowl game.
Excellent Choice.

LINING UP A QB AT 4 YDS DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF TAKING HIM OUT FROM UNDER CENTER,IMO. AT ONLY 4 YDS, THAT MEANS HE HAS STILL HAS TO DROP IN ORDER TO GET PROPER DEPTH ON A LOT OF THROWS. THATS THE BEAUTY OF HAVING A SPREAD GUN QB BACK AT 6-8 YDS AS MOST OFTEN HE WILL ONLY NEED TO MOVE LATERALLY, NOT BACKWARD. Just my opinion as always.
