Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches, I do run blocking drills with the defenders holding bags. We will go through hook block, down block, trap block, pulling, and combo blocks with our offensive linemen while the defenders holding bags. Do you believe that it is more effective to have defenders hold bags or is it better to go live and not have defenders hold bags? I await your responses.

I like for the OL to work against a man because I like for them to keep their hands inside on the breastplate of the defender and lock on to him. I like for the OL to "stick their face into the fan" when they block. I dont think you can do this with a bag. Now for wingt blocking those huge 100 lb bags are great to do your down and gap blocks against and throw the bone into.
i agree with mbkcoach, you need to have your linemen get used to getting their hands inside and hitting with 3 points (stick their face in the fan). this is a key concept of blocking, and it needs to be worked whenever possible. in my own personal experiences, about half the time that i lost a block was because i didn't get my hands inside. it needs to be worked so much that it becomes second nature. so no bags is what i say.
don't worry about what you don't know. if you had to know what you dont' know you would've learned it by now
Lou,
I would say using bags is not a bad thing, however, I would only use them to teach the fundamental techniques of the blocks. I plan on using bags this summer as a teaching tool, then in the fall I will use them as a refresher course as I advance into live man blocking.
Much prefer live blocking dummies! HOWEVER, as the season wears on and the bumps and bruises suffered by all linemen began to pile up, I went to DL's using hand shields two of the practice days of the week. Just my way.

Point well made! I always found that the bag holders were trying more to get out of the way than anything else! Every now and again we would get a kid who really knew how to use the bag for a battering ram and he would get real pleasure by administering a lick with it! Thats when the injuries occur. I rode pretty good herd on them, but secretly wished they were all like that! FOOTBALL IS A PHYSICAL GAME.

Let the holder KNOW who is blocking him (our O-Line points before getting down) so they can FACE the blocker. Bag holders should DELIVER a blow (not just absorb a hit). If it is a standup dummy - brace one knee FIRMLY into it!
