Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Sadly, we ran at 2:30 - 2:45 some days. We are really cutting back on our number of plays in team script and focusing of fundamentals. Our problems came when we tried to do too much or something too many times. In addition, we tried to go right after school and kids and coaches had not had the chance to check the pratice shedule and get mentally ready for the day. Starting a little later, runing on a clock and air horn. The session is over we are done. Limit huddling. Water closer. Becoming more efficient with time.
i have told the staff 2:30 is the longest we wil go probablt on Tuesday or Wednesday night with the day before game day 1:30.
Incredibly, our practices ran from 2:30 p.m. to usually 6:30 and sometimes 7. Our kids spent an hour in the weight room then had 20 mintues to get dressed out and we stretched for about 20-30 minutes so in actuality about 2:15 - 2:45 were spent on the field practicing. I love football, but practices were boring. If I thought practice was boring I can only imagine what the kids must have thought. All of us assistants brought it up to our coach, and he said he would address it in the offseason. This spring our practices are about 2:00 on the field plus 30 minutes of chalk talk.
I never liked those Coaches who said, "WE'RE GONNA GET TWO GOOD HOURS OF PRACTICE IF WE HAVE TO BE OUT HERE FOR SIX HOURS."
Sometimes its better to cut practice short when things arent going well then to extend them. Because when the first hour of practice is crap, we (coaches) are already agravated, and our frustration level is elevated, and the team notices that. Plus being agravated we are now harder to please...which can send the whole practice down the toilet and ruin your week (game prep).
Generally I believe in a 2 1/2 hour practice: 30 minutes Special Teams, 60 minutes Offense, and 60 minutes Defense.
Two hours of high intensity, total concentration is the best I ever came up with. I had an archway made with the word CONCENTRATION painted on it. The guys were required to line up, jump up and touch the sign in single file, and proceed to the field. After 2 hours the concentration factor becomes non existent most of the time and the physical body just is not going to allow for a total physical effort beyond that time limit. Just my opinon as always.
