coaches just wondering how many of yall use the point method in the gun option. and also how has it worked out for you. Which one do you prefer. The point method or meshing
Thanks to the forum, we went point last year and never put the ball on the ground. I found that the better your kids get the less you can tell the difference visually and from gun, you get more of a mesh look because your QB and Back are facing a little different direction.
The fb has his back to the read which will give a completely different look than option under center.
no coach, thanks for your time last year, not only were we more successful on the field we were able to put our time to plays instead of mesh drills. our practice now is spent on read drills and we are much farther a head because my QB is working more reads than I would have imagined. This is great because we have been able to expand our passing game....
Coach Easton,
I know that you have been asked about the point technique a number of times, and I remember reading about it some time back. I have tried to find this in the archives, but I am not finding it. Would you mind telling me where, besides this strand, I would find a full run down of the point method. We are going to the gun option (I have Coach Campbell's book on this... excellent resource) and I would appreciate any direction you can give me on this.
Thank you very much.
I have a request in now for a thread search by a coach who knows right where one that includes most of what you will need to know is. I wrote it awhile back, but have posted a ton on the subject. Should have an answer for you tomorrow I hope.

I just posted a complete run down of my method of the point technique verses the conventional ride and decide. It is under the topic: installing the option game here on the forum. I hope this will meet your needs.

Thanks for taking the time coach! I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I am assuming that the principles hold when working from the gun.... point at the unblocked backside EMOL and read his move. He squeezes or moves down the line (crosses inside the point of the ball) = pull the ball; he comes upfield (crosses outside the point of the ball) give the ball and carry out your fake. Am I on the right track with my understanding of this?
Thanks again.
Coach Easton - we are going to the point method next season - our second in the gun - an added note that we picked up is to point at the read and follow the movement of the DE - If he attacks the QB the ball will stay pointed and be stationary - the RB will take the ball - if the DE chases the RB the QB continues to point the ball at the DE and keeps - it is a little like the ride on the disconnect but really is the point thought process. What are your thoughts on this variation?
IF IT WORKS FOR YOU, GO FOR IT. One thing I would like to clear up for everyone is the pointing of the ball as you approach the DE on your read. Just as in the OSV, we do not point the entire path to the DE, but rather keep it 6 inches of front of our numbers and use the slight rocking motion with two pressure points on the ball at all times. Then, as we approach within 2 steps of the read we fullly extend the ball and point it directly at the read. To have it pointed the whole path is to slow the QB down in his down hill atttack at the read as I outlined on how I run the OSV.
Glad to hear your going to give it a try!!! You will be glad you did, IMO.
