Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
The boy we are projecting at running back is approx. 220lbs 6'0 tall and runs about 4.7. The problem is he runs like he is 125lbs and wears a skirt. He chops his feet when he gets close to traffic instead of using his weight to bowl forward and wants to run more like a Barry Sanders than a Bettis. We are a gun team, running primarly I.Zone, Ctr, Power, & Spd. Option, with our main emphasis on the zone. He is also a little stiff in the hips and not quite as smooth as I would like on the cutback. My question, is there anyway to break him of these habits. I don't know if it is a mental block or what. I have had him for 2 years now, running the same drills as the starters before him and he hasn't changed much. He has to be able to run hard or he is a waste for us at the position. Would be grateful for any ideas.
Oneback- we can't put him 5th string when there is noone else, so I need to fix him. I would say he may be scared about being injured as he has been sidelined more than once in h.s. because of it. As for formation, we are mostly one back gun. I would say about 85% this past season. We are probably going to run a little more 2 back this year, but the 2nd body will most likely be a motioning receiver who is about 100% blocker, or pitch man on the pulls.
Have him run MIDDLE DRILL and OKLAHOMAS to toughen him up at least twice a week! If he is tippin (running scared) I'm with Bill. Get another FB as you can't have a tipper at that slot!

qbert: Don't take offense, but if he is the best you have - you may be in trouble. If he isn't physical - I don't know what to tell you. Not sure you can coach "guts". Like my nephew who trains police dogs says: "if they don't bite as a pup, they WON'T bite when they are grown"!
I hold out HOPE for every kid I ever coached - but in 40+ years I never had one change from a "ballet dancer" to a "raging bull". Just look for the "raging bull" FIRST!
