What formations do some of your run the gun option out of? I know Tony Demeo is making the double slot gun formation very popular. Do most of you use that formation or the 4 wide, 1 back set. Also what are the strengths and weaknesses of both of these formations?
It ain't about the X's and the O'x. It's about the Jimmy's and the Joe's!!!
We are currently using both 2x2 and 3x1 formations with a RB in one of the slot positions. We could very easily insert another RB into the other slot position. If we want to run option, we either motion the RB or have him drop step back into pitch relationship.
We've run a four-wide set for a few years now, and we've had the "slots" playing about seven yards from the OTs. We had a great QB and four superb athletes who could run and catch the ball, so it worked well for us. We also liked the idea of stretching teams out. One of the biggest benefits is the qbs ability to read an edge blitz--he can see the man creeping up easily.
The problem with having the slots this wide is that running speed is nearly impossible. Most teams will triangle the slots with the OLBs, which puts them in a tough place for our slots to block them. The biggest negative with having the slots too wide is that the backside slot must start his motion early, and the play is easier for defenses to adjust to.
