NCAA dealing with eligibility standards. Newe proposals take place effective August 1, 2003. High School students graduating in 2003 or 2004 (present seniors and juniors) may be evaluated under either the former rule or the new rule in order to be declared eligible.
After you graduate from high school, your final certification report, which is based on your academic record from grades 9 through 12, will be evaluated under the new rule. If you are eligible under the new rule, the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse will automatically re-evaluate your academic record under the former rule to obtain your best possible result. It is not possible to mix-and-match rules. For example, you cannot use the 13 core-course standard of the former rule and the sliding scale from the new rule.
The New Rule:
Increases the number of core course from 13 to 14. This additional core course may be in any area: English, math, natural / physical science, social science, foriegn language, nondoctrinal religion / philosophy, or computer science.
CHANGES the Division 1 initial-eligibility index, or sliding scale.
Former Rule
13 Core Courses:
4 years English
2 years of math - (Algebra 1 or higher)
2 years of natural science/physical science - (1 year of lab if offered by high school)
1 year of additional English, math, or natural/physical science.
2 years of social science
2 years of additional courses(from any area above or foriegn language, nondoctrinal religion/philosophy, computer science).
New Rule:
14 Core Courses
