Runs out of Bunch Set

We run our zone series to and away from bunch. To me, inside and outside zone are the most flexible base plays with regard to formation adjustments. If it is a tight bunch set, one thing that West Virginia does to control the backside when running away from the bunch is . . .
1. tightest aligned receiver redirects the DE,
2. second receiver releases to block the safety
3. third receiver releases inside and blocks the 2nd level player tightest to the box.
then, boot to the bunch with the mesh route
1. tightest alined chips to flat
2. second receiver runs the smash/corner
3. third runs the whip - inside release pivot to deep flat
What you've done with this is give the defense the same keys for the run and the pass - the backside defenders have to either play the run passive or delay their coverage.

Coach Mountjoy probably has some good thoughts about how to use bunch sets in the power and counter game as well.

Toss into the bunch - great play! My bunch buys blocked like: WR's 1 & 2 blocked down one man. #3 WR kicked out the Corner. This was a great play for us.....

We have had a great deal of success with Midline or quick dive plays right up the middle. I also like to split the backside out and run outside veer and speed option away from the bunch. Toss to the bunch side and power off-tackle work extremely well.

I was watching the tape of the Jacksonville/Pittsburgh (2007).
Steelers OC Bruce Arians must read from the same play book you listed above (3 Counter away from bunch) :-)
The Steelers came out in bunch right formation - TE Miller was in the the inside/off alignment, used a yo-yo type motion only he came to settle a yard back and over the tackle ( I believe they use this motion to set up the Toss 80/90 Truck play) only they ran the counter away from the bunch for a 15+yard gain (mind you once Willie Parker gets to the edges it's foot race - but seeing Miller and RG Kendall Simmons pull and the wash to the strong side with the down blocks was truly a beautiful thing!)
Living in the Pittsburgh area I get to see all their games and usually they only run toss or inside to the bunch side ( or play action passes). It was an excellent set up to run the counter!

I don't know if I described Miller's motion correctly but it's the same motion they use to get him moving when they run Toss Truck to the bunch side absolutely a beautiful thing.

The power/counter series has been good to the Steelers recently (Parker's record setting run in the Super Bowl was Power O with Fanaca leading - doesn't get much better than that!)
Certainly better than the stupid fly sweep the Steelers ran with Hines Ward on the goal line against the Patriots :-( OC Bruce Arians admitted in the press that he should have subbed in the big package ( my guess is they would have run the power o to the right with Fanaca leading again if they had another chance) which leads me to another point - how the Patriots can intimidate a good coaching staff into making poor decisions!
