I am looking for teaching techniques for the 7 technique in a Bear Defense. We are going to incorporae some of the traditional Bear package into our scheme and I am unsure how to teach this technique. I have read/heard conflicting coaching points for the technique. A college coach teaches the 7 tech to have his eyes in the backfield while playing the TE man to man wiht his hands and feeling when he releases for a pass. The books I have read state to have eyes on the TE and not worry about the run as he is an extra player. I am looking for what will work at the HS level.
In "BASE" Bear 46 - they play Cover 1 (Man/Free). The LBer in 7 tech on TE has him M/M!!!!!! That must be taken into account in teaching his technique (which OTHERWISE - doesn't differ from most 7 techniques)!
Thanks for the reply. Maybe I didn't state the question well, what I would like to know is where people teach the 7 tech to have his hands?
His aiming point with his hands on the snap of the ball?
Where his eyes are before and directly after the snap of the ball?
How people handle the TE releasing and blocking the ILB?
First of all - he must pretty much keep his eyes on the TE!!!!!!! He cannot take a play fake on a pass & leave him uncovered. As to the use of his hands - he is trying to get them INSIDE the TE's hands (& do a "little" holding to keep the TE from a slam/release on pass). From there - you just fight pressure.!

Thanks Oneback, Do you know if the video is any different than the book. I have read the book and it is very good, but my assumption was that the video would be basically the same. I also have the video entitled "Adapting the 46 Defense to High School Football" It wasn't exactly what I expected. I thought it would have some game footage and more specific info. Instead it was the basics of the 46 that was presented at a clinic.
WI Stout DIII runs a lot of 46 and their Def Cor explained that their eyes are on the backfield at the snap as they were getting ran off by the TE and leaving the C gap open. Everything else I have read/seen has the 7 tech eye balling the TE. I was wondering if anyone else uses that technique and if so to what result?
Not SURE if video is different from book - ask the people at that number I gave you. It helps to SEE the technique because a picture is worth a thousand words.
Remember: In BASE "Bear 46" they play Cover Man/Free - so 7 HAS to be aware of Y releasing on a pass!
