Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
COACH - WE ARE INSTALLING THE COUNTER THIS WEEK - AND IT LOOKS GREAT, EXCEPT THAT SOMETIMES IF OUR CENTER IS BLOCKING BACK ON A 3 TECHNIQUE - IT SEEMS THAT HE AND OUR PULLING GUARD ARE A LITTLE TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT - WHAT ARE THE STEPS THAT YOU HAVE YOUR PULLING GUARD TAKE? WE HAVE HIM KNIFING THROUGH THE LINE FROM THE GET GO. SHOULD WE HAVE HIM PULL FLAT FIRST UNTIL HE CROSSES THE CENTER THEN BEGIN HIS KNIFE?
COUNTER: First of all - align the puller (trapper) AS FAR OFF THE BALL AS LEGAL. THEN - here is what we tell him:
OFF GUARD (TRAPPER) = PULL THRU THE FOOTBALL. THERE IS NO READ, TRAP THE E.M.L.O.S. (“DIG HIM OUT”). IF HE GETS LOST INSIDE, IT BECOMES A NATURAL “LOG”. DON’T THINK “LOG”, THINK KICK HIM OUT!
“H” or OT (WRAPPER) = PULL ONE YARD DEEPER, AND ON THE HIP OF THE OFF GUARD. TURN UP HUGGING THE DOUBLE TEAM AND LOOK OVER YOUR INSIDE SHOULDER FOR THE PLAYSIDE Lber. LEAD THRU AND DON’T SLOW DOWN (IF PLAYSIDE Lber RUNS THRU, TRAP HIM).
One way that we have tried to deal with that difficult block on a backside 3 technique is to employ a leverage ruler between the the center and the bsg. Basically the leverage rule for us says that whichever one of those two players has a free backside shoulder, he pulls and becomes the trapper.
Don't forget the BST is on a hinge to cut off the playside gap (BS B-Gap). Once heard it called a "Slam & Seal"
He slams down into the B-gap with a lateral step with his inside foot - getting a hand out on the shoulder of the 3-tech. Then he pivots back to seal a DE or OLB. The 'hand slam' by the BST should slow down the 3-tech for your C enough.
If your BSG is having problems with the depth 3 options:
1) Vertical Alignment: Move him back!!!! You may consider moving your whole OL back - I play Canadian rules so we have a 1 yd neutral zone and I strongly believe it allows us to get away from a 'give ground to gain ground' mentality - I do not like taking ANY backwards step - all our zone steps are fwd.
2) Square or Skip Pull: The BSG will get depth right away and likely clear the block of the C.
3) Check it to the 3 tech - so your C only has to block back on the 1-tech
