Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I just became a member today and this is my first post, so please be patient with me. I became the Head coach this year at a school I have been teaching and coaching at for 19 years. We went 8-2 and qualified for the Ohio Playoffs. We were eliminated in the second round, but man what fun we had! Anyway, we started the year using zone blocking and had great success with the outside zone, but not much with the inside zone. I basically taught both of them the same. I know that this topic has been covered before in this forum, but what is the trick to getting the off-gaurd zone to click? I hope this is not to broad a topic??? BOK
What we've found is the inside zone is all about the back side. If you can convice the backside guard and tackle to get the defense running (toward the play), the cutback lane will appear more often than not. The inside zone is at it's best when the HB has that nice cutback option.
Sort of a spin off question. We check the inside zone to the 1 Tech. But, more and more, I'm finding teams checking to the 3 Tech. What do you zone gurus do?

I don't know if I'm a zone guru but have run the zone schemes for many years at least since the rule change of 1985. With the zone scheme its best run at the 3 technique with the back being able to cut backside of the 1 tech. the cutback on the 1 tech occurs because of the combo by the guard and center the combo can get things pinned and the inside release of the backside tackle walling off the backside LBer. For the backside tackle it makes for an easy inside release when the ball is run at the 3 tech and the back can cut backside. Normally the running back will come right off the butt of the tackle and behind the combo of the 1 technique. Coach CAmpbell
I see what you're saying, and it makes sense. I guess the main reason we run it at the 1 tech is to get that good double team (and hopefully a corresponding push) at the point of attack.
Thanks for all the great responses to my original post. Here is a question for you. Could the inside zone be ran out of shotgun-5wide? We have a kid that is very talented as a passer and will also be our best ball carrier. Draw it up and tell me what you think. I know someone is going to say JUST RUN THE DRAW! BOK

Yes you would if you've emptied the backfield run it as a QB draw or what we call a QB Base play. The alert Base and Draw sets to different blocking schemes. Coach CAmpbell
Should your 42 Inside (in the Gun manual) be checked to the 3 tech? Also in your manual, the running backs lane changes. Does he have an initial aiming point before he cuts off the cack heels of his lineman?

Coach with the inside play from the gun you are trying to take advantage of the backside end who is playing the QB. The running back dropsteps to square his shoulders to the LOS as the QB rides him while reading the 5 tech. Good play to compliment the stretch. Coach CAmpbell

The landmark for the runnng back is the outside hip of the guard to the otherside of the QB. This gives the TB his landmark as he rides the mesh past the QB. Coach CAmpbell
QB reads the backside end, if he chases down the line, pull the ball and run. Option principle, don't block him, read him. Slot or inside receiver helps block outside support, have even seen the option off of this. If you want to account for all D-linemen, mesh it. QB rides TB, line blocks opposite way for the QB running the zone. A good ride freezes LB and sometimes takes them out of the play, TB blocks backside DE not accounted for by the line.
BS DE on Zone 3 ways we took care of it in college: 1) Run out of 2 back and have FB kick him out (Tackle to LB) FB can be ST, WK, or I Formation 2) Run reverse action with slot receiver and don't block him (see this quite a bit in college and NFL) 3) Boot Action by QB (as coach said before)
Rules: Run at the G-T Dbl, cut at feet of lineman (push it!), run to daylight: Home Run is cut back behind 1 tech and BS OLB
