Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
on what plays would u say it is good to run fold blocks( draws, zone, quickhitting, or slow developing)? how often? and what are the draw backs? When i look at them they seem to be very productive but i dont see fold blocks too often and i just wanted to know if there nis a reason why.
I agree with Coach Mountjoy. The fold is our preffered scheme to attack a shaded or gap playside DL. The only thing that gives us trouble is a LB blitz to the spot vacated by the pulling OL.
I posted on the DL forum asking how to defeat the fold. I don't think anyone has responded yet but if they do that might help answer your question.
when running the midline to the TE, I have the OT always block #2 - which may be a 9 tech when aligning with a TE. The TE folding inside the OT and blocking the LB is great scheme - instead of using a typical double slot formation where the PS slot blocks the LB.
We run a zone system with power and counter as change-ups. With that, I don't like to fold anything. I like a system that protects every gap and accounts for blitz. Folding eliminates the ability to effectively block blitz. They also take too long to teach. There is only one situation in which we will fold. That is on our stretch zone (our widest play) when we face a playside DE in a 7 or 8 tech, S stacked over the TE, and a safety that has come down to playside. In that situation, we have to combo our TE and PST to the S and have the lead back take the safety. We don't have an angle to zone the 7 tech to the S so, we will fold it. However, this is strictly situational and if the defense shows this look on a regular basis we will run away from it or use formations and/or motion to force them out of it.
The way we respond to adversity is a direct expression of our character.
We fold our C and PSG on weak lead against a shade look. Block down the gaurd and wrap the center around. We have smaller guys and had a problem getting movement on the shade and still getting the backer. This has worked very well for us
Question on technique- Do you teach the folder like a trap block. Ive seen NFL Guards almost shuffle step before going 2nd level. Also in a zone scheme- does this change the read of the RB ie IZ we read the 3 tech - if he is down blocked we know he's out of the picture. Also, does anyone pull or fold the center - especially from the gun- ie vs 44 - weak G base blocks 1 tech-Center folds to ILB?
Last Q- What about crossblocks -ie 2 adjacent DL - do you teach the steps the same? Love to hear thoughts
