Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
What are some tackling drills that you guys use? We do Open field, Angle and eye opener 3 days a week during the season. We on;y do these three. I think that we get stagnate as the year progresses and as the kids get tired of these drills. what are some other drills that we could incorporate?
When I coached defensive linemen, I often did a goal line tackling drill. I placed a long bag in the middle of two 5-yard lines. One edge of the bag is about 3 yards from the sideline. The tackler aligns with his back to the sideline with a hand on the bag. The ball carrier aligns facing the sideline, with his hand also on the bag. On the whistle, the ball carrier must get into the end zone by running to one end of the bag or the other. The ball carrier can not fake, nor can he run straight over the bag.
This drill forces the defenders to stay low and drive their feet, or else they will be driven into the end zone.
I do an angle tackling drill with tall blocking bags.
I set two up (10 yds apart) and get the players in 2 lines in the middle.
On command the players run at a good angle to the bag - keeping their head to the OUTSIDE. We have a player stading near the bag who gives the tackler a number with his fingers as the player comes in to tackle.
The tacklers must shout the number (keeps their eyes/heads up), tackle with head outside and wrap. We emphasize rolling the outside shoulder while wrapping to help with the tackle.
I like the drills for 2 reasons:
1) It can be run quickly with many reps - and you aren't taking anyone to the ground. Sometimes in a 'live' drill players focus less on technique.
2) Most tackles on the field are an angle variety - and this drill focusses on head placement and having the eyes up. When that head gets behind - that's when we see arms tackles, and that's when we start having the ball move in the wrong direction.
Head up straight on (head up, see what you hit)
Angles drill, I use mainly for LB's.
pursuit drill, tackling from behind the ball carrier.
DISCOURAGE SHOULDER ROLLING TACKLES, SICK OF SEEING RB'S SURVIVE THOSE AND JUST KEEP GOING BECAUSE THE TACKLER DIDN'T WRAP UP AFTER THE HIT!
KEEP YOU HANDS OFF THE FACE MASK, PLAY THE GAME ACCORDING TO THE RULES OR DON'T PLAY AT ALL!
MAKE CERTAIN OF THE TACKLE BEFORE TRYING TO STRIP THE BALL CARRIER! IF TACKLER HAS PROPER HEAD PLACEMENT ON ANGLE TACKLE HE CAN JAR THE BALL LOOSE AND STILL MAKE CERTAIN OF THE TACKLE!

The "offense" can go to either side of the dummy and run iso or scissors. It is no accident that the drill area widens past the "LOS." We want our ILBs to attack the lead blocker while maintaining outside leverage. The LB to the side away from where the FB goes checks counter threat and then attacks the ball carrier through the cutback lane. The two LBs will remain on "defense" untill someone scores on them. If two LBs defeat all the pairs of participants, all except those two are going to run. Any pair of LBs who allow a TD will run.
We are trying to teach:
-tackling
-proper pursuit angles
-defeating a blocker
-team work
-"it pays to be a winner"
Allow me to add something about tackling. If your train your kids to READ THEIR KEY EFFICIENTLY and RUN TO THE BALL you will find that almost all of your tackling problems will be solved. Why? Because you will have multiple defenders at the ball and it is easier to tackle somebody when there are three of you than when it is just you.
I learned from Denny Marcin, New York Jets Defensive Line Coach, this spring how to teach tackling:
1. Attack the ball with your eyes.
2. Your chest must run through the chest of the man holding the ball.
3. Shoot the arms upward and through the man holding the ball.
Remember, tackling is a process. It starts with 1. reading your key efficiently; 2. running to the BALL as fast as you can after your key indicates where the ball is going; 3. knowing how to tackle while being an intense individual.
I hope this post helped you.

VERY GOOD, Lou! Chest contact is the way to go! One more thing to add to your list - "DON'T CUT YOUR MOTOR OFF" (keep your feet moving - bring them WITH you on contact)!
I have a drill we do at least twice a week with the LBs. I put them face to face and have them each fight for the tackle. I tell them that I do not want them to take the other man down. The drill is done by each one fighting to drive the other guy back. They cannot turn to the side and drag down. They have to stay chest to chest. I will also have them turn sideways and do the sae. Here they have to turn to get to chest to chest and then drive the other man back. I like this because it is low impct and there have been time where I had to step in and work with a kid. I also like it because there is nothing more degrading to a RB than getting driven back 5 or 10 yards.
