Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches,
During 2-a-days this year, I've been keeping track of who is making the tackle on our scout defense when we run plays. Versus the IV, it seems to be the MIKE (4-3) more often than not. Here's what we're doing.
We run a flexbone
PST blocks SAM
PSG bases DT (always run to a 1 or 2 tech)
C steps playside and climbs to MIKE
BSG bases DT
BST bases DE
PSSB crosses with WR and blocks CB
WR to play crosses and finds SS
QB/FB/BSSB are involved in the option
Just looking for different ways to do this where we can seal the SAM, MIKE, and 1/2-tech.
PSE- Stalk
PSB- ILB to FS
PT- 1st inside defender
PG- DL on or down
C- Playside Linebacker
BG- Scoop (Playside Gap if Ace Call)
BT- Scoop
BSB- 2-step mo, veer path
BSE- Crack
QB- Veer Steps
RB- Veer Path
(We double the down lineman and track the inside backer with the center and slotback- If there are two inside linebackers, the center has the 1st and the slot has the second)
If you run Triple Option (A Gap Triple):
PSE- Stalk-Crack (Cover 2)
PSB- Free Safety-Kickout CB (Cover 2)
PT- Inside Linebacker
PG- Base-Down
C- Playside Linebacker
BG- Scoop (Playside Gap if Ace Call)
BT- Scoop
BSB- 2-step mo, Triple Path
BSE- Crack
QB- Triple Steps
RB- Triple Path

If you take Coach Cella's advice and change the PST's rule to "INSIDE," then he will end up on the MLB. Keep in mind that the PST should take a good inside release step (to avoid the DE) and work straight upfield...the MLB will come to him. That makes the OLB (Sam/Will) the pitch key. By the way, controlling the MLB one of the keys to attacking the 4-3...make sure you have some things in place to beat him when he flies over the top too fast.
Coaches,
First of all thanks for all of your help in the spring. A few questions about how to run midline against a 50, or if you would run mid line vs a 50 what is the difference than ISV which we all ready run.
finally mid line vs a 60?
Thanks again and Coach Cella the ISV true triple was a huge success our first game.
Cory, glad to hear that the veer worked well. It is the best play in football and it is very difficult to stop the veer as long as you can execute all three phases of it and have complimentary plays to take advantage of pinching 5 techniques, crashing inverts, and a secondary forcing to the perimeter.
If you are going to run midline vs. a 50, which I don't. You will base the center on the nose, have the guards block the inside linebackers and have the tackle veer release and track the playside linebacker to free safety. If you use a tight end or slotback, he will work to the near safety. The fullback will read the center's block and move accordingly. I would check to veer vs. a 50, because you have better angels to run veer.
vs. a 6-2 The center will block backside #1, the backside guard will block backside #2, and the backside tackle will block backside #3. The guard will block the inside linebacker--if he flows to the b-gap, he will work to the backside linebacker, the tackle high walls the 5 technique, and the tight end or slotback will track the inside linebacker to the free safety. Midline will work well vs. a 6-2 pending the 6-2 does not include an a-gap down lineman. If it does, check veer.
Good luck this week!

Coach Cella,
When you say A gap veer as oppose to the B gap veer I am assuming that you mean the following:
A gap veer is aiming for the A gap (navy veer)
B gap veer is aiming at the PSG butt crack. (air force veer)
Am I correct in my assumptions? If not then please let me know what you do mean. Finally, why would you run the A gap as oppose to the B gap?
Thanks
Karjaw
