Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I ran stretch many times last night and was going no where. I was furious with my OLine. I watched the film. Holy Crap, 85% of the stretches, there was a huge cut up lane (not even cut back), and they didn't take it. What can I do. We are single back with HBack.
Bill - You PROBABLY have Alex Gibbs' tapes. Look at those cutups (which are taken from BEHIND the offense). The RB NEEDS to look at these & get a FEEL for how to read the play, & to make the ONE cut & live with it. The HARDEST part of the play to teach is the RB READS! The tape is IMPERATIVE. Here is a SUMMARY of the RB's reads - but he needs to SEE IT!
RB: LINE UP 7 ½-8 YARDS DEEP. DROP STEP & RUN ON TRACK FOR YOUR LANDMARK - THE BUTT OF THE TE (OR WHERE THE TE WOULD BE) – PRESS THE HOLE. READ HATS OF THE FIRST TWO MEN ON THE LOS COUNTING FROM OUTSIDE-IN (EXCLUDING Lbers). IF THE OUTSIDE MAN COMES IN – YOU GO OUT. IF THE OUTSIDE MAN GOES OUT – YOU GO IN & READ THE INSIDE MAN (RUN OFF HIM). RB IS PERMITTED ONLY ONE CUT, AND LIVE WITH IT! DETERMINE WHERE YOU WILL CUT BY THE TIME YOU GET TO ORIGINAL ALIGNMENT OF TE’S BUTT.
I FIND IN THE ONE BACK STUFF, THE RB NOT ALIGNING DEEP ENOUGH AND IS HURRYING HIS READS
AS A RESULT. AS ONEBACK SAYS, TEACHING THE RB CUTS IS THE HARDEST PART OF THE PLAY WITHOUT DOUBT! But, in order to MAKE the cut you have to SEE the cut and if he is crowding to close to the LOS he will never see it correctly, IMO. I watched Nevada play the other night, just to see this PISTOL alignment and how it works. It's nothing more than an "I" without a FB and the RB aligned deep enough to get up a good head of steam when he gets the ball and more time to see his cuts, IMO. Just another one of these fad offenses, but the two points mentioned are definite advantages.

How you TEACH this play depends on your PHILOSOPHY of the play. It is run DIFFERENTLY by many people.
SOME (Broncos; Alex Gibbs, etc.) try to aim for the butt of the TE & take it UPFIELD ASAP. OTHERS aim 2 or more yards OUTSIDE the TE & try to take it wide unless FORCED to cut it up.
Many strictly ZONE the play, while OTHERS (the Colts, etc.) use "pullers".
ALL this effects the reads & coaching of the RB!
Once you have determined HOW you wish to run it - you must rep the "H" out of it! As Alex Gibbs says: "you can't perfect the zone plays & run a bunch of other stuff with it"!
Moved my RB back a yard and really stressed slow to, fast through the hole. He ran for 92 yards. Much better than our top runner of 22 yards the week before. Things are starting to come around.
