Could any of you coaches out there give me some tips/drills/techniques which will improve our line stemming? We use 4 down linemen and occasionally will walk a lb up to show a 5 man look....
SFALCO, Well, this is very simplistic, but we always line-up in our 4-3 in our base alignment(5, 1 weak, 4, 9 strong) and then stem from there. We do this all the time whether in ind, group, or team.
SFALCO, We will stem to what we call OVER(move toward strength) which becomes a stack(5 tech gets head-up on weak tackle, 1 tech gets headup on center, 4 tech aligns headup on strong tackle, and the will lb moves up to play a 9 tech. We gameplan this one to use against double tights. We also go to what we call UNDER(move away from strength) in which every down guy moves one eye and the Sam lb comes up to play a 9 tech. UP which simply moves our SAM into a 7 tech to the tight end side. BEAR which is just a bear look playing man free in behind it.
We play gaps, and everybody has to know their gap. We make it simple and say you've got the gap that you endup closest to. Get up field, fight pressure and recognize flow. We call our S/S the Deamon since our Nickname is Blue Devils, and he ends up in the core of the DEfense unless we get 4 wideouts. We set school records for TFL and our Deamon made 140 tackles in a 12 game season. Uh, did I mention that we blitz like crazy? Play with it and draw it up. find some sound fronts that you like against the offenses you are going to face and then coachem' up. BOK
Dave, stemming is when the defensive line changes their alignment at the snap of the ball. For example, a defensive line may originally align and then stem to another alignment. I don't see a whole lot of this anymore, but this can be a real pain for offenses. I hope this helps and I will see you in the Bronx, Dave.

You may have herd of Lufkin,Tx. We won state in 2001 and our Qb was the Sooner killer Reggie McNeal who scorched the sooner D for 4 TD's threw the air during his freshmen year. What we do is simply walk the will LB up to the line of scrimage. Say the declare is left left left then he goes to the right now in the hudle we will say Eagle that means 5 mine line. Will LB goes opposite the declare while the bandit (LE/LB) goes to the declare. If you have a TE you play up on him split his outside leg you can get in a 3 point stance but I reccomend 2 point. If you get down block close and look for the GT coming at you and them you tell your player to sacrafice his self for the team and after the down block you SUB(CUT the GT that is coming at you it will disrupt the play and make it bounce and your mike or sam has an easy tackle for a loss. Now if you dont have a TE then you scream Eagle to your DT that lets him know to slide down a spot and then you line up in a 5 that is splitting the outside leg of the Tackle.Same rule applies if you get a down block. If you get pull stop and your eyes go directly to the QB because he will boot around you if you get to deep on a pull. See with a 2 point stance you able to get your high hat low hat read and you can drop your Will LB and your bandit back for a pass if you have to.
2001 Class 5A STAE CHAMPS we were ranked as high as #6 in USA TODAY and finished it #12 going 15-1 our only loss was to Evangel Christian Academy who can recruit players and they barely beat us.
I play Bandit for the Lufkin Panthers I am behind the teams returning defensive MVP. Im the LE and a LB alot of times thats why we call it a bandit.
when steming, can you explain the problems it creates for an offense. We are going to stem from a forty front to a fifty and would like to know what kind of blocking problems you may think this will create.
