Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We play a 3-4 defense and our linebackers are young and inexperienced. We teach them to read the guards, however, we are 5 games into the season and they are still looking into the backfield. In addition, they are flat footed and not ready to take on iso or lead and we are getting shredded on inside and outside zone. Does anyone have any ideas?
In my 43 defense I teach SAM AND WILL gap assignments. I want them looking at gaps. So I move them closer to the back heel of the DE. They step down into their gap practically staring at the Guards. They make the read and attack or back off.
The downside is they don't get much play in the passing game. However, Mike 7 yards off LOS checking the TE/slot/post. His read is more complex, but he is my stud.
THE GUARDS ARE THE WINDOW TO THEIR SOULS, ALWAYS HAVE BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE. But, you have to teach them to read THRU the guards and TO the backs, DOING THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST TO LOCATE THE BALL FIRST AND THEN DISCERN FLOW. In this day of false keys, it is imperative to give them rep after rep against the scenarios they will see the most and to help them in their decision making as to the best way to react to each.

You simply set up the 3 on 1 "READ DRILL" everyday where you have the LB lined up on the G.
Coach stands behind LBer & signals G to pull left, pull right, block out on dummy on DT, block down on dummy on CTR. or fire out on LBer:
"READ DRILL" (D = DUMMY)
T-G-C
D---D
---B
---Coach
See if LBer reacts properly. NOTE: To ADD a second read (IE: "ball" or near back) - AFTER teaching the G read - graduate the drill by addong a back 5 yds behind center either WITH a ball (to simulate flow), or to without the ball (to ISO the LBer), etc.
