Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We went to a 3-4/5-3 defense afetr a very poor year with the 30 Stack. I have been struggling as of late with the defensive coverage schemes and playing these spread offensive schemes. I was hoping for some input on Coverage schemes you may have been running with the 3-4 and 5-2 defense. We currently run a a 3 Deep 4 Under, 2 Deep Shell w/ an Invert and Roll coverage, Basic 1/4 coverage and a Man 2 Shell. We also run a 1/4,1/4 1/2 coverage versus trips.
any input would be great.
In High School you don't need over 2-3 coverages. ANY of the ones you listed are good! ALL depends on what you do best (& what your opponents do best)!
A BASIC guideline we use in the passing game:
1. Vs Horizontal Stretch teams - use Cover 2 (2 deep/5 under zone)
2. Vs Vertical Stretch teams - use Cover 1 (Man/Free)
3. Vs Play Action teams - use Cover 0 (Full Man) & blitz like hell!
Runs support is another question. I wish I had time to type all this out but I don't!
What type of teams do you play who run spread? Option? Passing? Do you have decent cover guys in the secondary. We play cover 2 or man (1 or 0), but mostly man. If a team puts multiple receivers on both sides, we might check to a cover 3, but I question whether that is even worth our time. Usually we are better off just getting aggressive with our pressure.
What exactly are you having trouble with?
Thanks to all you guys...We see a number of Spread Teams and our cover guys are worthless. We have been weak their all year long...the More I think about it it wouldn't help what coverage schemes I'm in if we can't simply cover....I do like the comments though and any other helpful tips would be greatly appreciated...if anyone has some good db's they wanna trade for some ocean front property in Iowa call me...

Coach Hawg, remember that stack...double eagle...shade...3-4 are all apart of the 50 family....do not just settle into one of the them, because they all compliment each another...choose one to base out of, but it is imperative to introduce all of the other members because you will need them...:beer;
There is a thread under the "Actual Quesions" heading on this site titled "Defending spread sprint passes" that you may be interesed in looking at.
Your best hope (IMO) is to set traps with your coverage. Try to get some picks. You may find that your DBs can catch, even if they don't cover all that well. One way to do this is explained on the thread mentioned above.
Do you have a specific formation that you are worried about?
