Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
How do you guys handle a shade and a 3 when running inside zone towards the 3 Am i right in assuming the center punches the shade and works to front side linebacker or does the center just forget about the shade and work to the linebacker right away leaving the shade for the BSG to wash by the play it seems kinda far for the BSG to go but i could be wrong??? Any thoughts???
Center & Off G zone from the shade to the LBer (important to get vertical movement on the shade off the LOS on the double team before coming off on the LBer). ON G MANS the 3.
Go to COACHILLUSTRATED.COM (Joe Paterno's site) & download my diagrams on the Zone plays (both) vs. this look ("4-3 Over/Stack")! It is under "ZONE BLOCKING PROGRESSIONS"!
thanks alot coach my next question is you don't outline the bear front meaning a 0 nose and a pair of 3 tech tackles how do you teach the zone against that front? do you need a call or in your numbering system the nose would be 0 the stacked backer would be 1 and the three techs would be 2
.........1..........
.........M...........
.....2..0..2.....
.....T..N..T....
.....O..X..O
Is this the right way to count or am i wrong in assuming that??? Your rules hold true on the backside but the FSG may not know who to block....I guess if he sticks with his covered/uncovered he would be alright Is this one of the situations were i need to have my center make a line call??? How do you handle this front
When you number defenders - there MUST be a "0". There MUST be two #1, two #2, two #3, & two #4.
Therefore - because double teams in ZONE blocking are TOWARDS THE CALLSIDE - you number the tandem on the Center #0 & BACKSIDE #1 ( the BACKSIDE GUARD & CENTER zone THE TANDEM on the Center). The backside Tackle cuts off #2 (his # man). Since our O-Line splits ONLY 18", & is lined up with their helmets on the Center's belt - we can accomplish this (these factors are VERY IMPORTANT).
If the Inside Zone is to the RIGHT - here is how the numbers go (IF the diagram shifts - there is a stack head up on the Center, & both Guards are covered by "3 techniques" on their outside shoulder): Note that the man on the PLAYSIDE GUARD is #1 THAT side (ON G "mans" him). #1 backside is in the tandem (THERE MUST BE TWO #1's)!
All the rules that explain this are below. If you read down a ways you will note it says: NOTE: IF YOUR MAN IS STACKED IN A “TANDEM” – ZONE WITH TEAMMATE WHOSE MAN IS ALSO STACKED. Thart takes PRIORITY for the Left Guard (above) over "covered/uncovered"!
PROGRESSION FOR TEACHING INSIDE/OUTSIDE ZONES
1. TEACH BASE MAN BLOCKING # ASSIGNMENTS
A. CENTER BLOCKS #0
B. GUARDS BLOCK #1
C. TACKLES BLOCK #2
D. H & Y BLOCK #3
E. #4 ACCOUNTED FOR SEVERAL WAYS.
F. NOTE: IF “0” IS NOT IN THE “CENTER BOX” – CENTER DESIGNATES “0” AS THE FIRST DEFENDER TO THE SIDE HE IS BLOCKING.
G. IN A STACK – THE DLM GETS THE LOW #.
2. TEACH “COVERED/UNCOVERED” (TO DETERMINES WHO ZONE BLOCKS
AND WHO MAN BLOCKS).
A. IF YOU ARE UNCOVERED – ZONE WITH YOUR PLAYSIDE TEAMMATE.
B. IF YOU ARE COVERED – ZONE WITH YOUR BACKSIDE TEAMMATE (UNLESS HE IS COVERED THEN YOU MUST MAN BLOCK).
NOTE: IF YOUR MAN IS STACKED IN A “TANDEM” – ZONE WITH TEAMMATE WHOSE MAN IS ALSO STACKED.
3. BLOCKING CALLS (ONLY IF NECESSARY – “GRAY AREAS”)
4. TEACH LANDMARKS (AIMING POINTS) FOR COVERED AND UNCOVERED
BLOCKERS (IN INSIDE AND OUTSIDE ZONE).
5. TEACH THE 3 SITUATIONS THAN CAN OCCUR IN ZONE BLOCKING (DLM
GOES INSIDE, STRAIGHT AHEAD, OR OUTSIDE).
NOTE: TERMS OF IMPORTANCE:
A. COVERED = THE ALIGNMENT OF A DL HEAD-UP OR EITHER SHOULDER OF AN OL ON THE LOS.
B. UNCOVERED = THE SAME AS COVERED EXCEPT THE DEFENDER IS OFF THE L.O.S. BY ONE OR MORE YARDS. UNCOVERED ALSO INCLUDES A VOID (NO ONE IS ALIGNED IN FRONT OF AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN).

If you have a 0 tech, two 3 tech tackles and a stacked Mike, the PSG has to block the 3, since he should be trying to stay in the B gap he might just have to keep riding him out. The C and BSG read the 0 and the Mike. Likely if they are stacked, at least what we have seen is that the nose will slant and occupy either of the A gaps. If he goes to the A gap to the callside that means the Mike would have backside A on that particular play. Therefore the C stays on the 0 the BSG will fit up into the Mike and the BST has to cut the backside 3 off. Now if the 0 is a two gapper and the Mike flows they just have to get on those two, the back will cutback and it will come back over the center. We saw this look once this season sparingly against one team and this is how we handled it. We tightened the BST down a little so he could get the 3.
One last note. Dont let them chase the Mike. If he flows to the play with the nose they have to stay disciplined and just keep riding them past the hole and the back will cut back.
We have always preferred the "Outside Zone" OR the "Counter-Gap" vs that look! There are 4 vs. 3 in the middle if you run the Inside Zone, & (%-wise) you have to "hit it just right" to make it go!
NOTE: The BEST play we have EVER run vs that defense is the COUNTER-GAP to the Split End side (as shown in Coach Scott's diagram above). It is a Counter back to the left off Inside Zone ball handling to the right. The LT blocks down on the 3, the LG blocks down on the 0, the Ctr. blocks back on the 3 to his right, the RG pulls & traps the DE to the left, and the RT pulls & wraps through the hole for MLB! Joe Gibbs used to KILL Buddy Ryan with this play to the open side (where there is NO secondary run support available at the P.O.A.)!
Here are the details of the play (NOTE: the O-Line cannot split over 18"):
“GAP” CALL MADE PLAYSIDE (ON T & ON G) – EVERYONE BLOCKING A DLM ALONE MUST GET A “BIGGER BITE” ON THE DLM (YOU MAY NEED TO DRIVE YOUR HELMET ACROSS IN FRONT OF HIM AND USE THE FAR SHOULDER IF HE IS A “PENETRATOR”).
B) CENTER = BLOCK BACK ON THE FIRST MAN ON L.O.S. AWAY FROM POINT OF ATTACK (BE ALERT FOR Lber RUN THRU – OR NOSE CROSSING YOUR FACE TO OFFSIDE).
C) OFF GUARD (TRAPPER) = PULL THRU THE FOOTBALL. THERE IS NO READ, TRAP THE E.M.L.O.S. (“DIG HIM OUT”). IF HE GETS LOST INSIDE, IT BECOMES A NATURAL “LOG”. DON’T THINK “LOG”, THINK KICK HIM OUT!
D) OFF TACKLE (WRAPPER) = PULL ONE YARD DEEPER, AND ON THE HIP OF THE OFF GUARD. TURN UP HUGGING THE DOUBLE TEAM AND LOOK OVER YOUR INSIDE SHOULDER FOR THE PLAYSIDE Lber. LEAD THRU AND DON’T SLOW DOWN (IF PLAYSIDE Lber RUNS THRU, TRAP HIM).
E) OFF TE = TAKE A LATERAL STEP TO B GAP (STAYING SQUARE) USING A HAND WHAM ON ANYTHING THERE (TO BUY TIME FOR THE CENTER), THEN HINGE BACK ON EDGE RUSHER.
F) WR’s = BLOCK THE SAFETIES!
G) QB = COME BACK TO 5 O’CLOCK ON COUNTER LEFT, AND 7 O;CLOCK ON COUNTER RIGHT. AFTER HANDOFF, FAKE BOOT AWAY FROM P.O.A.
H) RB = TAKE A LATERAL (HEAVY) JAB OPPOSITE POINT OF ATTACK (BE PATIENT). LOOK THE Lbers OFF AWAY FROM THE P.O.A. HIT DOWNHILL FOR THE BUTT OF THE ON G, AND GET ON THE HIP OF THE WRAPPING OFF TACKLE. FOLLOW HIS BLOCK (IN CASE HE TRAPS RUN-THRU). YOU MUST RUN OFF THE DOUBLE TEAM, & LOOK FOR YOUR CUT FROM INSIDE-OUT.
YES! That is mentioned above. The Center blocks flat down the LOS to the 3 away from the POA. The G is ONLY split 18" - so the Center doesn't have but 24-36" AT MOST to go (that IS NOT VERY FAR)! He gets help from the TE who pulls behind the OFF T (wrapper) to the B gap - he "hand/whams" the 3 to help the Center - then hinges on anyone coming off the edge.
WE like to keep the OFF T in to help the Center ("hand/wham the 3 until he feels the Center - then hinge back on edge rusher) & pull the TE on this play. With the TE OFF the ball - it is EASY (he pulls DEEPER than the trapping G anyway)!
We run the counter trey out of a two-back set (FB fills), but out of a one-back set we have the single back fill backside, and the QB run it. It had not occurred to me to use the TE to get a piece of the strong 3. Out of a two-back set, would you use the FB to fill? If not how do you block it?
I NEVER use 2 backs but that does not matter (it can be done from EITHER). You can put "H" (our FB) ANYWHERE you want him - either by alignment, or motioning him there. That is simple!
In THIS formation - you can run the Counter to EITHER side, with the Off G trapping and the OFF H or Y leading thru:
FOR EXAMPLE: Motion H over to kick out on the POWER-O right (with the OFF G leading thru the hole) - IF the defense over-adjusts to motion - run the same motion right with H AND come back with the Counter left (with the OFF G trapping & Y leading thru the hole (& vice-versa). A GREAT sequence!
EMAIL me at: billmountjoy@yahoo.com & we can discuss how the Redskins and Steelers use the series.
Check out the article below. The Counter and the Power-O are IDENTICAL except on the Counter - the Off Guard traps & the FB (or "H") wraps. On the Power-O - the FB (or "H") kicks out & the Off Guard wraps. EVERYTHING ELSE (including the ball handling) = SAME!

NFL: The Power O
It's all about attitude
During Joe Gibbs' first tenure in Washington, when the Redskins led late, guard Russ Grimm would exclaim on the sideline, "It's time for the tanks!"
The tanks were two and sometimes three tight ends to supplement "The Hogs" in a bruising running game. Gibbs would mix 40-50 gut, a straight-ahead inside zone play, with counter trey, and more often than not, the Redskins ran to victory. Now Grimm is an assistant in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers employ Power O, an off-tackle running play some of the league's other better ground teams -- Chicago, Seattle and Tampa Bay -- also use.
The weakside guard pulls, and follows fullback, who is responsible for blocking the outside defender. The tight end blocks down on the end, and the tackle and play-side guard work a combination block to the second level. With a counter step by the back, the linebackers can be sucked in, creating a natural bounce to take the play outside. It's a play Green Bay used with Ahman Green -- and the reason the Packers are struggling without guards Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle.
"Power O is an attitude play," Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner says. "Let's double-team 'em and ram the ball up in there."

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. This isnt an ideal defense to run IZ against. However we have the QB bootleg off the zone to make the DE honor the QB. If he keeps crashing, then we run the boot. The idea with teh blocking scheme is to get tight enough that the T can cut the 3 tech off. Again it isnt ideal, but faced with this defense, that is how we would do it. The W is blocked by the slot. If he doesnt widen with him we throw the bubble.
I noticed the Giants using the counter-gap last night exactly as you described with Schokey coming down to get a piece of the DT, then swinging back around to pick up the back-side pursuit. On other downs, it appeared that the center had no help and could not get there in time, as such, no one blocked the backside DT and he (Tank Johnson at least once) stopped the play for a loss. I plan to install your series next season, but will be sure to emphasize proper technique by the backside TE.
I take your point about the bootleg action to pull the DE outside. However, if the BST is unable to reach the 3 and create a seam, the back will cut outside of the pile and into the DE (unless he bites very hard on the fake boot).
Our 3 techs are taught 1) never get reached 2) do not allow the jump through. I would be irrate if one of them were to violate both these rules on the same play.
You are right, thats why if he cannot be reached we will cut him aggressively and make sure he is on the ground. Nothing illegal, but a solid cut by the tackle, then it should cut over the center.
You can also run toss strong against this look. Put the H in motion to really give you a numbers advantage.
Also use Bill's counter gap to control this defense until they get out of it.
If you run toss strong and counter weak they cannot stay in this look.
I dont recommend forcing the IZ against this look. I just suggested a way to block it if you would happen to run zone on a particular play and this is how they lined up.
This is how we run it. Not a new idea, many teams run the zone this way. We combo the 3 technique to the mike with the C and PSG. BSG and BST are responsible for the DT and LB on the backside. Ball presses the inside hip of the TE and then rolls up into the B gap or possibly A gap.
Vs. bear front, we do two things. We will either cut the nose with the BSG (might have to cut his splits), or we will leave the nose and wham him with the FB. To do this, we put the C and PSG on the 3 tech., man or scoop the backside DT and LB, and use an offset FB to trap the Nose.
The way we respond to adversity is a direct expression of our character.
Coach Scott - On COUNTER/POWER - the Center blocks back flat down the LOS like a "bat out of hell" & keeps going "until he breaks glass"!
The Offside Tackle (who is only split 18", & is way back OFF the LOS) slides INSIDE & gives a "hand/wham" to the man the Center will block then hinges on the rusher coming off the edge! It is a REAL QUICK technique for both the Center & Off T. IT CAN BE DONE!
If you still have a problem with it email me at billmountjoy@yahoo.com
We have never seen the Will backer man up on our slot receiver. If a defense wants to do this we should have a mismatch with a receiver on a linebacker so we will come back and throw the ball to the H.
We have blocked the perimiter with that a few times. You can have the Z crack if you would like to but what we would have, is have everyone scoop playside and have the H help with the 9 tech with the Y. We want him to be able to get the 9 tech turned with the Y, then he will look inside to pick up the Mike backer.
We have also tried it as a down block. H on the 9. Y on Sam, T-G combo the 3 to the Mike. There are numerous ways to skin the cat on this one.
If you call it and the Will DOES go in motion you have to try to reach everyone and just take what you can get. You would be a guy short however. Also if we see this look, we would put the H in motion and throw to the Z on the backside. Take advantage with the passing game if they man up.
Good point about the potential mismatch of WLB on a slot. However, lets say it is a DB out on the slot (as would be likely if you have 3 WRs in the game):
As you correctly point out, the motion by H will give you a pre-snap indication of man, if the SS follows him.
The counter gap weak as described by Coach Mountjoy sounds pretty good (though I suspect it would be tougher to run with the Y on the LOS, becasue the SLB, aligned on the LOS in a 7 will jam him if he tries to wham the 3 and follow him if he pulls).
Coach Mountjoy,
If they are in man, will the SLB on the LOS (stand-up 7) be a potential problem for the counter-gap?
All,
What are some good strong-side runs against this look?
P.S. I am very interested in this topic as our base D is a 46, man-free
Y can pull from ON the ball as well (Counter Gap Weak). The Delaware Wing-T teams have been doing it FOREVER on their "COUNTER CRISS-CROSS"!
You can also run the "POWER-OH" to the TE side with the TE turning out on the wide man & the FB ("H") kicking out the 6 technique on the TE - (& the "Outside Zone" to TE side as well). Speed (down the line) option hurts this defense (esp. to the SE side from a TE Trips as drawn below)!
The formation we LOVE vs this defense is "TRIPS" (our TE TRIPS). To adjust to this - they take a MAN OUT OF THE BOX ON THE SPLIT END SIDE!!!!!!! Opens up all KINDS of possibilities (too numerous to mention typing). If you would like to discuss this - phone me at 804-740-4479 before 10:30 PM/EDT (OR email me at billmountjoy@yahoo.com - identifying yourself as "Coach Scott").
We fake Inside Zone Right & hand to "H" coming Left on the "H-AROUND"! RG traps DE on left & everybody else blocks down!

When it comes to Zone blocking, ONEBACK IS THE MAN. Having gotten his tecniques from the great NFL line coaches, he is on top of this facet of the game! Coach Campbell is also very knowledgable in this area! I have learned a lot about the zone blocking schemes from ONE BACK.

I agree. This site would not be what it is without Coach Mountjoy or you. I have been routinely humbled since finding this site. I have learned answers to question I had, AND answers to question I didn't even know enough to ask. Thanks to you both.
Ditto Coach Scott, Bill, Jerry and Jerry and Lou have been gracious enough to share a ton of information with me that undoubtedly has made me a much better coach than I would have been if I never came to this board.
This site is the best of all that I have seen as far as the QUALITY of the info being shared. Chuck N' Duck is good too. Many of the other sites are "glitzy", but do not have the SUBSTANCE this site has. Our thanks to Jerry & Lyle!
