This is what I found by google searching flexbone. I looked through page 30 so far.
Would you be willing to share how to stop the flex bone? We have a hard time defending it and usually the first game of the season, we give up about 400 yds rushing to this team every time we play them! what are some keys we should be looking for?
Coach
Stopping the flexbone? Well we can only theorize how to stop the flexbone. This offense when executed properly can not be defensed. IMO. However, he are some simple things:
1. Assignment football. Assign some one to the dive, pitch and QB.
2. Take away their best runner.
----If QB then come down on the dive and make him pitch it.
----If FB then come down on him everytime.
3. Use the FS to run the alley and play pitch man. Try to get two on the dive, QB and Pitch. BEWARE of the play action pass though.
4. Shift your interior DLINE. Most option teams want to run veer to a one tech and midline to a 3 tech. Shift them with the cadence and just maybe you will catch them trying to run veer to a 3 and midline to a 1 (NAVY does this to Air Force)
5. Watch film and see which option they run. If they only run midline and veer then make them run load option. If they do not have it in their playbook then you got them. If they do then maybe they are not as good running that option. If it is veer and double option then make them run midline. Sometimes option guys do not run certain options or they do not practice them as much.
6. One of the easy ways especially on the HS level. Is have your CB's beat the stalk block. If CB are better than their WR you can beat it just with that alone.
7. Feather the Pitch key. It will slow the decision making process down and give other defenders a chance to help you out.
8. Q stunt on the dive key and twist stunt with MLB and the three tech, If you are getting killed with midline run a twist stunt with MLB and three tech. If veer then Fake the taking of the dive key and then take QB.
Remember any option coach that has some knowledge of the offense will have his players prepared for these things listed above. But just maybe you might be able to get away with it for a little while before they firgue it out and your offense scores a couple of times and gets you ahead.
Hope this helps

1995-2000...that is my alma mater!!! I only got to Coach with the current staff for one season but they taught me an awful lot about football. I worked for several years under Billy Dawson (currently the Head coach in Nashville, Ark.). He just won back to back state titles in Arkansas. The staff at Parkview does a wonderful job. When I moved to Missouri and got my first shot at being a head coach, I installed the flexbone offense that I learned from working with Kenny and Scott at Parkview!!! It is a very tough offense to defend!!!!
