How many of you stick to your shotgun offense when you have a short yardage or goal line situation. Ive been thinking of using something similar with a different formation, almost single wing of sorts.
To follow up on that, when do you go to that short yardage offense near the goal line, 10, 5, 3 yard line? Just wondered what some of you are doing.
Scoresomemore,
We have had a lot of success running the ball at the goal line out of shotgun. Now, our best runner is our quarterback so we like to run a lot of empty sets and jet motion one of the WR’s for misdirection. Off of this action, we would run QB counter, QB wrap, and QB zone – very similar to what Utah used to do with Smith at QB. After a few years, teams began ignoring the jet motion and crashing their ends as soon as our tackles stepped down. To counter this, we began running a QB sweep where we would block down with the tackle and pull both guards, hooking the end, and getting a lead blocker to the outside. This play has worked really well because most teams run man on the goal line and we motion the outside defenders away from where we want to run. If the DE crashes, we can get to the outside. If he comes up the field, we can kick him out and get up inside.
