Does anyone use a 2 foot jump/explosion into the offensive man they are lined up across from? I know this is a technique used at the college level, just curious if anyone has tried it or uses it, looking for opinions.

defensive lineman would jump and explode their arms into the offensive lineman across from them by jumping with two feet, much like a broad jump, instead of taking a step with one foot or the other after ball movement. This basically requires a very balanced stance, a very slight stagger if any, reacting to offensive man movement.
Jim McNally, offensive line coach of the Buffalo Bills showed me this summer how the Patriots do this with their nose and 5 techniques--but out of a THREE point stance!

When I was on the field at the Bills camp, Coach McNally was going over how the Patriots Defensive Linemen lunge into the offensive linemen and how the Bills were going to counteract that when they played them. It was pretty neat. Happy Thanksgiving Coach Mountjoy!
PS. How cool is it to see Pat White have the success he is having after we got to meet him and work with him at the camp?

Lou - Happy Thanksgib=ving to YOU! You're right! I think Pat has two more years.
Enjoyed meeting you at the Camp. You might want to come to our Semi-Annual Clinic in Richmond, Va in mid July (date not yet set, but 2nd or 3rd week in July usually). We do not charge, but limit it to 30 coaches who run SIMILAR offenses (ONEBACK with 2 WR/2 TE, &/or, 3 WR/1 TE) . We generally have 1 NFL Coach (last time it was Larry Zierlein), 2-3 College Coaches, & the rest are HS Coaches (Dan Robinson, etc.) speaking. Last time - we had coaches from 8 different states!
I will be speaking at the Mega Clinic in Baltimore on Sat Feb 10 & Sun Feb 11. Hope you can make it.

AS Bill say, that is an old LB technique for sure. It would appear, to me at least, just from hearing the coaches description where he says they actually leave both feet like in the standing broad jump, that that would leave the guy totally UNBALANCED and of course that is something that we preach against from any position player with the exception of the aforementioned LBs. Did you actually see the Bills using the technique or I guess they were working on how to defeat it, as you stated. Is it sound in your opinion?

They were working on how to defeat it. The Bills only spent about five minutes on it, but Coach McNally also discussed it at the clinic I attended in July. The Patriots defensive linemen lunge into the center and two OT's. Watch the Pats play and see what you think.
If the Pats are doing it in their 3-4, it obviously must be sound. Three Super Bowls don't lie.
Happy Thanksgiving Jerry!

the college that was using this was Northwood University in Michigan. They are a Division 2 school, they also run veer option on offense both from gun and under center.
Coaches, Brad Lawing has a DVD from coaches choice on this subject. He preaches hip/hand movement before the feet. The hips and hands will re-adjust according to the direction the OL is taking(inside/outside) It is similar to a sprinters start. One of the benefits according to Coach Lawing is that it promotes a flat back and good leverage. Its a very thought provoking DVD, im just not sure my kids could pick up on that technique.
scoresomemore I would like to discuss this further, if possible, email me at NewDLcoach@aol.com
Coaches, I just purchased the washington state attacking 4-3 dl tape, and they teach the same technique. They call it stepping with the hips. They teach rt./lt handed stances but dont really teach first steps. They tell their kids to step with and throw the hips and their back foot will move to catch themselves. They tell them to keep their feet "busy" and to hit on the rise, knock the OL back and escape from the block.
