Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We run the option as well as the normal I formations plays (lead, power, counter) and throw the ball. We are worried about not having enough practice time to perfect the OSV. We will for sure run the ISV and midline. Instead of learning another footwork (OSV), we are considering running the FB G as our C gap play to the FB, and predetermining a give or pull. On the pull the PSG will log the DE and we will run a two man option. On the give, the PSG will kick the DE out.
Does anyone do this already? Thoughts?
We do run a predetermined "G" play as you described. We also run outside veer. The steps are not as difficult;just add one more step. The "read" for your QB is actually easier than inside veer.
Is this G play just a quick hitting dive? Are you making it into an option on your own? Does the G stand for the guard pulling? From I formation, it sounds like a SNARE play.
Honestly, the O/S veer is the O/S veer..... It is a Great play and it can't be copied by using the "G" or Belly.
You can actually have two plays out of the Belly and this is the Belly Dive or the Belly Option. The action for the G or Belly is different than the O/S veer and reallly should be treated as such...IMO....
Thanks for the feedback guys. I don't think I was clear.
The FB G is not a new play by any means. I am definitely not inventing anything here. It attacks the C gap like OSV, but is not a triple option.
G tells the play side guard to pull and block the DE in our offense.
We would not run the fb give as an option - the purpose of this would be to eliminate the need for practice time on the mesh and footwork for outside veer.
The option off of the FB G would be a called double option. The QB would fake to the FB, the PSG would log the DE, then the QB and TB would execute the double option, probably reading the flat defender.
Coach Lo - You are saying that we should run OSV for sure. Do you put the FB behind the QB? Could you explain your footwork? DO you ride and decide or point the ball?
We have our FB behind the center. In my opinion, outside veer is easier to run than inside veer for the QB.Open up exactly like you open up for inside veer except QB needs to add 1 or 2 extra steps to take the play over the OT,according to your splits that you use.The QB needs to sprint down the L.O.S.We use ride/decide.I feel this gives the QB more time to read and "fishes" the Defense into playing the FB or not.
Coach,
You are on the right track. Air force runs the G and G-option. They got it from Delaware Wing T. They call it the 182 down and down option. What you do to set the read is simply this. The OC reads the play of the DE. If he is coming upfield hard and the TAckle is coming down hard you run the down or G. If DE starts to wrong arm the guard then run down option or G-Option. If CB starts to make a play then run the Down option pass. This play is great. The best part is the WB coming around and blind siding the OLB. Make sure the FB angles to the outside leg of the tackle and the GUard pulls off of his butt. If down option then the Guard bells more and logs the DE. This also an inexpensive series because you are using the same skills everytime and there is no new teaching for each play. It is also a non team play.
Good Luck

We dont lose any games we just run out of time.

Each of us has to go with what we know and are comfortable coaching. The OSV is just as Coach LO describes above as far as teaching goes. After mastering the double read of the ISV, the OSV is a snap because you just read the EMOL. The steps are exactly the same with the distance dictating an extra step or two from the B gap on the ISV to the outside leg of the Tackle on the OSV.
But, in a lot of years having run the triple out of the bone and the "I" on the high school level I am totally convinced as an ex-QB that the ride and decide is as archaic as is possible. I would totally have to disagree with you if you continue to think that the ride and decide offers ANYTHING over the point method.
After a 42 year on field career as a HC/QB COACH/OC I have long ago, some 20 years now find it much harder to teach a young QB prospect to keep his head downfield on his read man, while reaching backward with both arms to the Dive Back which, IMO, is totally uncomfortable and unnatural. I played QB under the ride and decide and will be the first to tell you THE POINT method is far superior. When the QB takes his escape step and then drives DOWNHILL BEHIND THE NECESSARY LINE SURGE WITH HIS ENTIRE BODY FACING THE SAME WAY ( NOT COMING DOWN THE LOS PARALLEL WHICH ONLY INVITES PENETRATION AND FORCING OF THE QB BACK AWAY FROM HIS READ WHICH PRECIPITATES THE DREADED FUZZY READ) and his arms reaching backward to the mesh, he soon discovers how much EASIER IT IS TO MAKE THE CORRECT READ AND HOW MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE HE IS VERSES THE AWKWARD AND UNNATURAL RIDE AND DECIDE.
Please don't feel that you have to exclude the OSV from your option attack as it is a natural, and in my opinion, absolutely necesary evolution of the ISV and requires nothing more than what has been described
(taking an extra step) to install. It cures a hard pinching 4 tech and gives the ISV more opportunity to be successful on game night.
My post is intended to be informative and in no way intended to be controversial with those of differing opinions. My opinion is based on once having a run of 33 wins verses only 3 defeats running the veer on the high school level. We lost the state semi playoff game the previous year in Florida's largest school classification at the time which was 4-AAAA because my QB put the ball on the dive backs hip using the ride and decide and he fumbled inside the 5 yd line just as we we were about to score the winning TD! We went to the point method that we got from Carson Newman and never once looked back!
