Let's start a thread with a list of DL DRILLS / AGILITY DRILLS that you do with your guys. I need help with some more drills.
Here is one DL drill / agility drill that i do with my lineman.
CIRCLE 8's
With spray paint or cones, I mark a big circle 8 on the practice field with each circle of the 8 having about 3 - 4 yards diameter. I put one DL on the middle of the 8 and one at the top. The players are angled and put in a 3 or 4 point stance and will fire out low and "race" around the 8. One man is obviously ahead of the other and will win the race. The motivation behind it is for the man behind to catch the man in front. In order to do this, he better stay low, dip his inside shoulder and be in great control of his body. Obviously, the guy in front better do the same or else he will get caught. If this happens, the guy in front will do some pushups.
I do this for about 5 minutes so that every DL gets a few reps - along with bags and other agilities.
I emphasize agilities and body control EVERYDAY for about 15 minutes before i get into drills regarding tackling or technique.
This particular drill comes from a tape of the Nebraska DL coach.
My favorite DL drills are any that feature the DL vs. the OL LIVE!!! You can't teach a bag to move, be physical, fight off blocks, etc. WHY PRACTICE WITH INANIMATE OBJECTS AS ON MOST GAME NIGHTS, YOU DON'T SEE MANY OF THOSE!!! One on one, 6 on 6 while the SE practices stalking, all live drills is the way to go in my book. The argument that " I don't want to beat my guys up" never held water with me.
FOOTBALL IS A GAME THAT IS INTENDED TO BE PHYSICAL IN EVERY ASPECT, WHY NOT PRACTICE THAT WAY? Just my opinion, as always.
