This past season caused a lot of reevaluation of the entire program at my school. We have a lot of talent in our district, but are an average program at this point, continually up and down. There is an idea of radically changing how we approach practice and coaching.
Currently, we go about things in what I feel is a very conventional manner, with all kids having positions on both sides of the ball and being coached this way, getting one or two days a week of specific coaching on each side of the ball. One of our coaches has a brother who coaches in North Carolina and the way they run their program is completely different and the idea is being kicked around of changing how we do things to somewhat mirror that fashion. The new idea is basically a 2 platoon system and the coaches coach a specific position for all kids 9-12. Basically, as freshmen, the kids get assigned one position, either offense or defense. They will practice just as that everyday in practice. Each coach would have his specific position to coach 9-12. (Ex. I would coach all DBs from 9-12 grade. Another coach would have all OL 9-12. Another coach would have all DL 9-12, etc.) There is no deliniation of Varsity or JV players during individual periods during practice. During team periods we split up into JV and Varsity to avoid too many mismatches. The idea behind it is that this would give a lot more specific teaching time to each position and get more kids on the field. This would encourage students who could play football, but don't want to sit and decide not to do anything to come out and play, increasing our overall numbers in the program.
This would take a great deal of change in practice planning and overall thinking from the coaches, but we would be the only program in our area attempting anything like this. I was just wondering what everyone thought about it. My initial reaction was questioning it, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. What are you thoughts?
