Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I need some advice from some of you 50 gurus What do you think is the best way to defend the Ram set (single back with pro to one side and twins to the other). Do you bump a backer to the twins and play 5-1 in the box? or do you simply check to a double safety (cover 2/4) look and stack the safety over the twins receiver. It seems to me that in a cover 3 shell, it is difficult to cover the flats to the TE side (assuming you roll your SS to the twins receiver. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!!
Adjustments are best out of your BASE coverage package. Putting in a NEW coverage just for this is just what the offense wants yoiu to do ("get away from base & play lefthanded")!
Bill's answer is absolutely correct. Anytime the offense can force you to get out of your base, they win that round! Based on that premise, I would just suggest that you work real hard in this off season to become familiar with the majority of looks you will see and then rep your base over and over to deal with it
as long as is posible before changing up.

Excellent advice! We are a young staff and a few years back, it seemed like we were "changing" defenses week to week. One reason was because we were not very good. The other reason was because we were letting what we saw on tape convince us to get out of our normal defense. It obvioulsy made things worse. Our D- coordinator worked very hard in the off season and summer and met with coaches and we were able to adjust and stay in our base.
The way we implement our defense is this:
1. First, the league teams that we play will run the same old stuff they ran last year with a few wrinkles. I have been in the league for 8 years and unless a new coach shows up in the league, the teams run the same schemes year in and year out.
2. You MUST prepare for these different looks during the summer in your passing leagues and during your fall camp. Dont wait until game week for that opponent!
3. We work on a different defense each day in the first week of two a days. ]
4. By the end of the football camp, our defense can defend and align vs the Wing T, I Pro, Sprad, and double tight formations.
We are mainly a cover 4 team and vs. this package we will stay in the Cover 4 shell and play Cover 3 behind it, with the safeties playing force to their side. We keep the backers in the box to force the teams to throw. The Will does have number 2 and the FS robs the QB if drop back pass
Can play man-free or cover 3 as a base.
Lots of other things to do out of this look.
Note: We do not designate anyone as strong saftey. W in the diagram may be SS for some.
