Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I am a HS coach in montana and we are widening the scope of our zone scheme from working on a single 90 degree board system to adding double teams to the mix. I know I want to run fold blocks, combo blocks, and as well as base the problem we are having is coming up with a definitive rule for our players on when to use the double team and who should be preforming the double team. Please throw any ideas at me. We see about 50/50 odd and even fronts and we work with single back and a wing back.
Coach I'd suggest you have a look at the Complete Offensive Playbook available here. It offers a lot of information that would be helpful to you. I've also gotten a lot of mileage out of Coach Campbell's videos on the zone and option schemes.
On the double teams the easiest way to do it is with the covered/uncovered rule: If you are covered (DL on a shade or head up) take your block to his playside number. Uncovered step playside and get a double team with your buddy, if the DL disappears work to L2. The key to it is to have a series of calls for the C-G, G-T, and T-TE combos. I've used Coach Campbell's Ace-Deuce-Trey calls with success. For folds he has a Jack & Jill call, Jack says the outside guy goes first, Jill says the inside guy goes first.
That's the first part, it's also really important that the combo's understand which LB they are likely to combo to. Obviously if someone threatens a gap the OL needs to pick him off, but knowing who to work to when the double team pushes the DL off the LOS is important too.
Love the inside zone scheme with the double teams, but it's hard to get right. It takes some smart kids to grok it and execute it (as with the fold schemes), but if you have those kind of kids up front and a TB who can get the concept that cutting off the B-gap V's for 3 or 4 yards is a good play, be patient and when the color crosses your face hit the cutback, man oh man it's something to see!
Also check out How to Install the Running Game (I think that's what it called) forum and look at the voluminous posts by Bill Mountjoy. He knows his stuff and his input has been very valuable to me. Hope that helps a little...
