Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We use it 75% of the time. Why? Our QB is our punter. We have a run/pass option. Gives the defense one more thing to practice. Our normal punter was very average.
Q = Pre-Snap pass read- If its there. On the snap Run Read - If its there. No Pass; No Run - Take 2 steps away from overload and kick. I didn't go into great detail so if you have Questions let me know.
You can use a "rugby style" punt from virtually any formation. We use it from the traditional "spread" and from a "wacky shift". The earlier post uses it from a double slot. Regardless of the formation, the punter must have the flexibility to run, pass or kick; otherwise your opponent can out man you.
Also, we get the question about whether he is a punter (entitled to protection) or a runner. Most of the referees will protect a rugby style punter after his punt leg has hit the ground and he has taken a second step. But, if your opponet gets to him while that foot is in the air - most referees won't call roughing.

There was an article written in American Football Monthly several years ago about the "Ugly Punt". Basically they overloaded the kick-side of the punter and taught him to kick the back of the ball--they just wanted him to punch it over the heads of the linebackers and let it roll down to the return man. They had it as a pass/run/kick option on every 4th down. It was a great article (I can't remember the author or issue). We used it as a change-up, and it worked ok, but not great. Got a couple of 1st downs, a couple of decent punts, and 1 or 2 losses on 4th downs. Would have been better if we focused on it more, but we just were playing with it as a potential wrinkle. Nice thing was, we only needed to find someone with some athletic ability--didn't need a great punter.
