Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches - We run the midline and veer mainly out of a 2 back set. What other running plays would you run along with the midline and veer? What would be your secondary package?
I assume you mean OSV as well. That is what we are planning for next year - this year ran just midline and ISV.
We also run lead, power, counter, and toss for our other running plays. We did run some "counter option vs teams that walked off their OLB / SS on the open side.
As far as passing, we ran sprint out and three step with play action as well.
You could also run this play "sally" style like the wing't guys. I have heard some call it JOKER where the BSG and BST will influence the DL up field - instead of trapping. Play action is still similar to above.
I think you need to have similar blocking schemes if you want to run a lot of different looking running plays. If you're going to run zone, I would zone block the option as much as possible. That being said, we don't run a true full zone so I am not qualified to answer.
I agree with Oneback. The problem with trying to combine a true zone running game with the ISV and ML is that they're all offenses in and of themselves. However, we run OSV as our C-gap run. We hit every gap along the LOS with TRAP, IZ, OSV, and OZ. Of those, OSV is actually because it compliments some of the other aspects of our offense very well.
I do know of at least one guy that runs a full compliment of option and zone running game, and does it all at a high level. Tracy Holland at Oklahoma Christian School (formerly at Heritage Hall HS). I had the opportunity to talk with a little bit about how they were able to execute at such a high level, yet still run so much offense. His response was, "We feel the ISV is a football play just like OZ."
Personally, as an OL coach I wouldn't want to run that much offense. I believe in what we're doing here, just making sure to hit everything along the LOS.
