The rules committee, under the direction of Fritz Crisler, decided to widen the goal posts from 18.5 feet to 24 feet to encourage field goals. But, at the last minute call from a lumberman friend of Crisler's informing him that the longest two-by-fours were 24 feet caused a last minute ruling that limited the width to 23 feet 4 inches, its current width.
