1st question.....quick passing game. I want to learn it, install it, run it for our passing attack. What say ye? Advice? Help? Anything at all would be appreciated.
What about a rollout/sprintout type passing game for a team with a very limited QB and slow receivers?
All words of wisdom are appreciated guys.
Quick passing game always indicates to me your classic 3 step drop game by your QB and short routes, for the most part, by your receivers. Teach your QB how to perform the quick 3 step drop correctly, (escape step, cross over step, brake step) and your receivers how to get into their patterns quickly and smoothly. Depending upon the age of the little guys you coach, just teach them sound mechanics of the drop. If they are a little bit older and can handle it, be sure and teach him to take his 3 steps in short choppy steps if the pass is going to break outside, and three shoulder width steps to let the play develop if it is an inbreaking route. One exception is throwing the deep go route: I always coached the QB's to release the ball no later than when the DB comes abreast of the receiver and has to turn his hips out or never any later than his receiver being more than 20 yds down field. without getting into a technical discussion on coaching QB's, let it suffice for you to show them how to be mechanically sound from the git go on the fundamentals of the position. Having played QB and having coached them for 42 years on the field, I found that if they are taught in the very beginning how to do things correctly, it becomes much easier for them to progress to the more sophisticated things they need to learn about being a QB. One thing that will help you install your passing game, coach, is to have them throw the ball every day to the receivers who will be catching their passes during the season! With summer just around the corner and plenty of time to practice on their own, encourage them to throw and catch every day they possibly can if they want to win come fall season! What formations are you going to throw out of for the most part? Let us know and we will try to help you all we can here on the forum!
