Coaches,
Online Mega Clinics has a Demeo triple option tape available.
glaziercliniconline.com/
It's old but very good. I thought I would post my notes. Hopefully it might help some new option coaches (I was one last year). They were running the triple out of flexbone. He starts the tape by starting with the QB.
I'm sure I missed some stuff, but I figured it might help somebody. This forum was a huge help to me last year.
I am going to see Demeo's O coord in PGH in 2 weeks. Should be fun.
----------------------------------------
Demeo's Triple option
FB path(out of flexbone), crack of Guard, arms wide , run through ball, clamp down on pressure
QB: first step is 45 degree, toes must face sideline, eyes directly on read
second step naturally occurs towards the line of scrimmage, slight rocking of the weight
Do not seat the ball, reach back to the FB as soon as possible after snap
"Give the ball UNLESS the read key comes flat to tackle FB"
"Better to be wrong than long" - no ride and decide, make decision on first step. We want
to get to the perimiter as fast as possible. Don't give the pursuit more time to get you.
If you give, quickle remove hand on fullback's stomach and press the ball into his belly with the other hand.
PULL:
If pulled attack inside shoulder of Pitch key reading outside shoulder.
QB runs for a Touchdown UNLESS the outside shoulder of the pitch key attacks you
Qb runs to the Option Alley - Hash, numbers, sideline
Slowly attack a crash end,
Quickly attack a feathering end, if he freezes, pitch it
FB blocking track if pulled: Read Key, LB, Free Safety, don't chase backers, go to FS
Pitch Key:
Attack his inside shoulder reading his outside shoulder
Pitch - Heart to Heart, step to pitch back, look at him, pitch to his heart
Pitch mechanics, thumb down, or free throw
RB - Look for a runner first and then blocking
make adjustments if the RB can't handle the LB (pitch off the LB instead of blocking)
Read key is the first defender OUTSIDE the FB's path
Pitch Key is the next unblocked defender outside the pitch key - (may be saying this wrong)
A read key that's hard to read (he's reading and reacting)is easy to block
A read key that's hard to block (man child) is easy to read
Drills
Start with the QB, do not any other players until he has mastered his initial skills. If the QB looks
bad, this will reduce the other players confidence.
QB starts with footwork first, 1 step, 2 step, then receiving snap and reaching back
Then add FB
Make sure the QB keeps his eyes on read key, again, no ride and decide. Make quick decision using UNLESS rules
Teach the QB the mechanics of the pitch first
Practice pitching to other QB's first. Then get them pitching on run.
Get them back under center and Teach them to attack the PK
Then have them go through the mesh phase with a FB and attack a pitch key(coach)
Then add pitch back
Go through both reads with 2 coaches.
