Anyone using or have the used the Maskill sled (the giant wood conditioning sled)? I'm very interested in it, but have reservations in that we teach as i am sure almost everyone does a thumbs up technique with our o-line's hands and it would seem difficult to recreate this on tha maskill. Let me now what you think of this sled.
In all the demo's I've seen of the Maskill sled it isn't usually used to teach blocking TECHNQIUE.
It's usually used to teach leg drive and as a conditioning tool.
IMO many sled only REALLY teach leg drive and conditioning. I'm not blessed to have a sled right now, and in my previous position we didn't have one either except at the end. I found we did more technqiue drills and focussed more on arm thrust and hip snapping without the sled.
The exception is a one man or two man Rogers/Gilman type-sled where the guys can thrust and lift the sled and practice running their feet as well.
I think the sled is an easy tool... but that's also its downfall - it really doesn't teach much in the way of blocking technique... you need bodies to do that!
We have a couple of Maskill sleds. I love them and the kids probably don't. It's possible to get you hands and elbows in the proper position with the sled. But I agree, I think the greatest plus of the sled is the leg drive, conditioning, and position unity that comes with making those guys push it around.
We use them alot in the summer: set up a couple of cones, tell the kids to partner up, and tell them that before they leave today every pair of players has got to get 10, or 12 or 20 reps in.
