Any drills will really work, I am working with a freshman kid all this summer, and he would like some new drills, and I would like to teach him some other things, as well as myself. Any help would be apprecieated, you can get ahold of me on EMAIL t_rodvelt@hotmail.com. Thanks again for your time.
kind of depends on if he is on the LOS or off. either way we teach our kids to read the EMLOS. he will do a couple of things. 1-pass block, 2-reach, 3-down block. against pass, he will rush the qb keeping his outside free and keeping contain. against a reach, he should fight hard to string the play out again keeping his outside shoulder free. against a down block he should fill and force any running play back inside. these are the three main things that an outside lb should work on.
Just have him go thru YOUR reads, & learn to tell the difference between pass and run. The LANE the ball is in is crucial here, as well as the block or release of the TE.
THEN - teach the TECHNIQUES of whatever coverage you play (man and/or zone). Coach his EYES here. Eyes on receiver in man, & eyes on QB in zone.
Using your imagination, you can set up an ENDLESS number of drills to teach the above!
AS Bill states, there is a myriad of drills that you can devise by using your imagination, as well as, old established drills. One word of caution, I never liked to devise a drill that didn't incorporate technique that are not actual football techniques for OLB's, just for the sake of drilling. Why waste time on something that will not actually benefit your guy AND THE TEAM ON GAME NIGHT?
