Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
In our many talks, I did have a couple of clarifications that I wanted to ask about. I know you prefer running IZ to the one tech but I have seen IZ run to the weakside attacking A gap and B gap. For the reduced side run, which is your preference? I anticipate a wide 4-4 defense with the OLB outside Y and H in a 2x2 set.
Also, I have seen counter drawn up running to Y but not to the weakside. How would you draw that up against that defense?
Lats question: I know you like to offset the R back to get a free release on 52,53 and 58,59. What running plays do you like to run with this set as well?
Thanks again. No word yet from the one school I applied for but another school is interested so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
The only thing you can bring is all that you can't leave behind.
First re: the pass. We offset R NOT to get a FREE RELEASE, but to be closer to his route once he CHECKS out on passes where he has to run a FLAT, WHEEL (flat & up), SWING, etc. ALSO on turnback pro AWAY from him it puts him much closer to his block on EMLOS. Runs would be COUNTER/POWER to the OTHER side, or DRAW up the middle.
The big misconception about offense in major college & the NFL is that you run ALL plays strong & weak. Not only are SOME plays better to one side or another, you do not have TIME to REP ALL plays to BOTH SIDES. Alex Gibbs says "we prefer the Inside Zone Weak, & the Outside Zone BOTH ways". Think about the old Houston OUTSIDE VEER - they NEVER ran it away from the TE! Larry Beightol says that the Packers ALWAYS ran the Power to the TE side, & the Counter to the SE side. The old Delaware FB Trap is better to the 3 technique side than the 1 technique side, ETC-ETC-ETC!!!!!!!
In a defense in which the B gap is defended by a LBer (which we get 90% of the time on the Split End side - with a 1 technique) - we like Inside Zone, & Counter. If the B gap is defended by a DLM (which we get 95%+ on the Tight End side - with a 3 technique) - we prefer Power & Outside Zone. We run our TOSS to BOTH sides. NOTE: If we run a "H-Reverse" or Z Reverse" (off Inside Zone fake) - quite naturally they have to be AWAY from H or Z. These are ALL the runs we ever use.
I can give a MUCH better explanation via PHONE. I could type a BOOK on this subject & not cover it satisfactorily. Call me this weekend at 804-740-4479 & we can cover it. I spoke at the MEGA CLINIC in Baltimore on Feb 9-11 on this VERY SUBJECT.
