I recently had an interview for a head coaching job, and I was asked some very strange questions that I wasn't completely prepared to answer. They were strange in terms of topic, but in terms of how specific they were. I'd like your feedback on them such as how you would answer them and if you have seen them asked before...
1. In your years of coaching, how many players of your have gone Div. I.
I wasn't sure about this one. What does that mean? Kids I have directly coached? Kids who played another position on the same team I was coaching on? Seemed ambiguous and overly specific at the same time.
2. What drills would you run during your summer conditioning program?
They wanted specific drills. These were not football people so would they even know what core lifts or pro shuttle or anything like that are? What difference does this make?
3. If you are named head coach, who would do you have in mind to hire?
This is the weird one. They actually wanted the names of the people I had in mind to hire. Specific names of coaches. Why? I didn't get it.
I've done plenty of interviews... they either 1. really, really care specifically about what you're doing with the kids or 2. they don't want you and are trying to make you look bad.
What do you think?

The names one gets me, because sometimes you aren't going to have much control over your staff. You'll be inheriting. I guess you will have some control if they are asking? In regards to the other two, I think the summer drill question is easy enough to answer, but weird that they are asking specific drills. I've never been a HC, but I guess I could say I've coached a D1 athlete--had a QB go to Princeton. Of course, since I was a freshmen line coach and he was the senior QB, I'm not sure how much I effected his development!!
Most HC's I know already have their staff in place before they are interviewed, they may retain 1 or 2 coaches form the previous HC's staff. It may be different from place to place, and I guess once you've been coaching for a few years you get to know enough guys, weather you've coached with them or met them at clinics etc. to have them on your staff. Just my observation.
I think the first 2 questions are weird....
I think at most places in IL, you may get to negotiate for a few spots, but for the most part, you are going to inherit a staff. I'm not the most experienced guy in the world, so that may not always be the case, but I believe it is most of the time.
Alot of it depends on what size school you are going to, how densely populated the area is etc. If you are in a large metro area, you usually get greater control over your initial staff, if it is a smaller rural area, alot of times you have to take whats there, or take the majority of whats there.
