my d-ends are running upfield when their OT is down blocking...i teach them to step and shoot and shuffle with their progressions of near back, next threat, counter, cutback, naked, reverse...but they always shoot straight up field...maybe they fear getting hooked...i also teach ball get offs like crazy...thats what they may be focusing on...how can i get them in the habbit of stepping and shooting on down blocks...any advice..any certain drills...thanks
Tilt them 45degrees so that their first step is at the shoulder of the OT...This will also give them an advantage of recognizing kick out blocks which may come from a lineman or back...They are also in a better position to get into the Hip Pocket of the OT if he pulls.......
I 4got to add that you can also move them back about 12inches....U never want to slow down a player's Get Off, so by moving them back they are still getting off, but they will not get 2deep upfield.......:wine;
