Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom

Would I be crazy if I totally "ditched" the traditional summer running and spent that time doing other things conducive to football. My thinking is that instead of having my skill players run "x" amount of sprints for an hour each day - I could spend that time working on running routes and catching balls. They would be running anyway, right?
Many coaches, including myself, have gone away from the traditional stretching - has anyone gone away from the traditional summer conditioning and geared that time to more football type training or learning.
I think the majority of kids are in shape anyway (exeption might be OL) because of their involvement in the off season workouts and other sports. I just sometimes wander if I am wasting time when I am blowing that whistle over and over again, watching those kids run sprints all summer long.
Another good thing is to let your OL/DL get in a litlle 7 on 7 too. They will run harder trying to catch a ball than they will jogging and as a former lineman I can say a chance to go score is a lot better than regular conditioning. I wouldn't want to have to go run while all the "pretty boys" get to play football.
An exercise regimen that most do not use is the best one of all for my guys. WE SWIM!!! No better regimen for cardiovascular health going! Each player swims ten laps, kicks ten laps, pulls 10 laps and finishes with another 10 laps of swimming. This is done in a pool that is 20 yds long. One trip down and back counts as two laps. The total of 40 laps is completed in one hour. NO BETTER EXERCISE THAN HYDROTHERAPY. All you need is a kick board for the 10 laps of just using your legs, a gallon can with a strip of rubber tubing to hold it between your legs for the pulling laps( arms only) and that is it!!! CHEAP AND FUN AT THE SAME TIME!!! GIVE IT A TRY, YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!!! OF COURSE THIS IS DONE IN RELATION TO STANDARD CONDITIONING METHODS AS WELL, YOU JUST DON'T HAVE TO DO AS MUCH OF IT.
