Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Can you give the OL one basic rule to cover all screens? Tell each position to do the same thing every time (one rule for playside one rule for backside) I'm talking about inside middle screen to a back; outside screen to a slot going away from the LOS; outside screen to a wide & smoke screen - inside screen to a slot or wide returning to the ball. Also, what do you teach the playside tackle vs a 5 or outside tech - last year he really effected our inside screens. We tried different things - cut - post - invite upfield. Any thoughts would be helpful, thanks
DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS ANY ONE RULE THAT WOULD SUFFICE, BUT I ALWAYS TAUGHT THIS:
ON ANY SCREEN CALLED, CHECK LIGHTLY THE MAN YOUR BLOCKING AND THEN LET THEM COME WITH THEIR EARS LAID BACK! THE QB HAS TO REVERT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE AND AS DEEPLY AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO GET THE NEEDED SEPARATION FROM HIS CREEN TARGET AND THE DEFENDERS.
Just my way, as always.

We have run lots of screens the past 2 years out of the gun, 4 wide set. Our most successful has been our middle screen to the wideouts. Playside slot blocks corner (#1), playside OT blocks slot defender (#2), playside guard blocks LB (#3), center blocks LB or safety, back side tackle blocks slot defender to his side (#2), and backside guard block LB to his side (#3).
We use a similar technique to the one coach Easton posted above at the LOS. I would recommend using the cage drill in practice with your OL every day to execute the play well.
To answer the initial question - I have never heard of 1 rule that covers ALL screens. Not only are there MANY TYPES of screens, but there are many TIMINGS on screens. For example - some screens are on 3 step drop timing; some on 5 step drop timing, and some on 7 step drop timing, ETC.
In a formation such as this (just for example) - you have screens to ALL 5 ELIGIBLES:
