Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have a bit of a delimma here. I am a second year head football coach of the high school program that has not had a winning season in 5 years. Last season, we went 1-9. The only winning that has been done recently was when I was the head coach of the JV program. I was moved up in hopes of providing a spark to the football program in general. We are in preparation for a jamboree on May 12 and have had an average of 18 players at practice daily. Talent is in the school, but they just don't want to work.
The problem stems from me being a bit of a disciplinarian. The players don't feel that they should have to how up for Spring Practice, participate in Off-Season Conditioning, or do any preparation before August. I have never spoken of any coach in any manner other than a positive one, but the previous head coaches allowed the players ALOT of freedom (i.e. showing up for practice 45 mins late, missing a practice and still starting or playing in the game on Friday, loafing through out practice, etc...) but I just don't feel right with doing that and I don't think that I ever will.
So my question to the veteran coaches is what am I suppose to do? Do I comprimise my believes in order to get more players out? Any suggestions or advice is greatly appeciated. Oh,by the way, we are a 2A program dropping to the 1A division in the fall.

Do not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES compromise your beliefs (don't make even the SLIGHTEST compromise between what you KNOW to be right & wrong)! You can be a disciplinarian (KIDS crave discipline) as long as you are fair, keep a positive & ENTHUSIASTIC attitude (do not demean young people) & show a sincere interest in every young man.
Check out these beliefs from one of the GREAT coaches in history BUD WILKINSON OF OKLAHOMA):
ERRORS IN DEVELOPING MORALE (MORALE IS TO THE PHYSICAL AS 4 IS TO 1).
FIRST = FOOTBALL BEGINS WITH MORALE! Once you get morale, it is easy to maintain. How to get it is a problem.
SECOND = HOW TO LOSE MORALE. Do what you said you’re going to do. Don’t say we’re going to practice 1 ½ hours and go 2 ½ hours. Training rules – if you’re not going to enforce them, don’t have them.
THIRD = MORALE STEMS FROM DISCIPLINE (ALL Discipline begins by being on time).
FOURTH = TREAT PLAYERS AS A PERSON. If he feels you are interested in him only as a football player, he won’t go all out for you. If you are interested in his academics, his personal problems, etc. and he knows this, he’ll go all out for you. Convince him that football is good for his future.
FIFTH = One year, Knute Rockne had 2 QB’s. Under great athlete, team failed; under mediocre QB, team succeeded. Why? Captain’s reply – “the great athlete is trying to show how good HE is. The TEAM is trying to make the average guy look good”.
ORGANIZE A MOTHER’S CLUB. Get mother on your side by pointing out to her what he can get out of football besides winning games. You are only asking her son to exhibit: Promptness; 100% Effort; Clean Living; Respect for others. These are the characteristics he will NEED to bne successful in life!!!!!!!
You SAY there is TALENT in the school. What good is skill without WILL? What good is ability without proper ATTITUDE?
I can send you more by Bud Wilkinson on "Developing Morale" if you care to EMAIL me at: billmountjoy@yahoo.com
Coach, at least you have 18 players working... You can win at the high school level with 18 committed players.
I pray to the Lord Jesus Christ that you DO NOT compromise your beliefs to get more kids working. Play the 18 you have... heck with everyone else! Your world revolves around those 18 players!
I anxiously look forward to discussing this further.

I greatly appreciate you all taking the time to respond to my post. I have been working tirelessly trying to make this thing work. I sat and talked with my wife the other night and told her that I was just gonna do what I had to do. I came to practice the next day with a renewed approach to my team. I know that it is gonna be hard, but I am gonna put my all into it. I was always told that you get out of it what you put in to it. Coach Mountjoy, I am going to watch that movie. I have heard great things about it, but never had the opportunity to sit down and watch it.
I called a meeting with all guys interested in playing and had about 35 to show up. Of those 35, 18 were the dedicated few. From the remaining, we had 8 to show up at practice on yesterday. I don't know how long they'll stay out, but we'll worry about that when the time comes.
Coach Cella, I think I recall a post where you spoke about small numbers in a program. If you still have any of that information I would love to have it. I am a young coach who is determined to have a long and prosperous career in football. Shakespeare once said, "The world's a stage and we are merely players." I believe this fully, I just have to play my part to the best of my ability and good things will surely happen. Thank you for your help and any additional information that you all have to provide will be greatly appreciated.
Mitch, I don't know the post to which you are referring; however, if you have 18 players, you can compete at this level. Take the 18 players that you have, get them stronger and faster over the next three months--measure their improvement. Then train them how to align with 100 percent accuracy, train them to know their assignment with 100 percent accuracy THEN train them to execute the technique that corresponds to the assignment. Worry about what you have--don't worry about athletes you are unable to control.
If I can be of any further help, please let me know.

Stick to your principles!!!! The kids that played for the former coach will only be there a short time. Everyone new to the program won't know how "easy" it used to be. They'll only know 1 way and that's your way. It sounds like it's the successful way, too.
This quote is not quite as profound as Shakespeare, but I believe it applies directly to programs that have had little success and a change of leadership. "It will get worse before it gets better," Dalton (Patrick Swayze's character from the movie Roadhouse.)
The players that were around in the old regime will get angry, rebel, and quit when they're asked to dedicate more. They've accepted losing and are not willing to risk more emotional pain for possilbe victory. YOU WON'T EVER WIN WITH CHARACTER LIKE THAT! Stick true to what you know is right and build a program right with those 18+ kids.
Again, thank you for all the advice. I have been working pretty hard over the last few days and things are starting to look a whole lot better. I have been having a consistent 27 over the last few days and things are falling into place because the kids now see that we don't need the ones that walk the halls daily telling them how they are not as good as they could be if they were there. The kids now respond, "We probably could be better with you, but we'll be as good as we can without you."
Coach Cella, your philosophy is similar to the one that we as a staff decided to follow. We make sure that we execute plays and drills until they become second nature. We leave no margin for error.
Funky D, I know that line from the movie...Hopefully it has been as bad as it was going to get and now we are on another page.
Again coaches, thanks for everything...I'm always looking for tips and advice.
Eliminate thinking is something I learned from New York Jets' DL Coach Denny Marcin. He said the less you have to teach once the pads are on, the better your team will be. Mike Pettine, who is the outside linebackers coach from the Ravens said that your entire playbook should be installed by the first day of camp. Training camp is designed to master the physical skills required to compete.
Mitch, you are definitely going in the right direction. It's all in the Lord's hands now.

I CHOSE NOT TO REPLY TO YOUR ORIGINAL POST AS I FELT THAT YOU WERE RECEIVING EXCELLENT ADVICE, AND HAD NOTHING CONSTRUCTIVE TO ADD.
Was just wondering at this stage of the season, how things are going for you and your team?
I hope you have stuck to your guns, not given an inch to the slackers and gotten rid of most of them at this point. In reference to your comment about the kids walking the halls telling just how much better the team would be if THEY were out there, etc. tell your kids the statement that they should be making is HOW MUCH BETTER THE TEAM IS WITHOUT THEM! If they were all that, how come they lost all the time??
WORKERS WILL WHIP SHIRKERS EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK!!! Let us know how your doing if you have the time.

This is just an update to a post that I began some time ago. We are currently 4-4, 4-2 in the region. We had Homecoming last week. Probably had our worst practice of the season...We lost 20-13. We had to dropped touchdowns in the endzone. We also had a fumble at the one yard line, after a 60 yard completion...The receiver was trying to make an ill-advised stretch for the goal line when we could have just come back and had 1st and goal. The good thing about the lost was that it was not a division game.
Overall, I guess some would say this is a pretty good turnaround, being as we were 1-9 the previous season. I don't though. We have the number one team in our class(1-A) coming in this week. We had several players miss practice this morning, I feel that it was from fear. I am and probably always will be a perfectionist, I just believe that there exist a right way to do everything. The community support has only increased slightly, I still have this guy that comes to every home game telling us how they need to fire the entire coaching staff...I almost lost it last week, he really got under my skin...Number wise, we have 28 kids, about 16 legitimate athletes, the others are young and trying to learn. I have been approached by several kids saying that they want to come out next season, which is a lot better than having to track them down...So I guess it is safe to say that I have not bent nor strayed away from my coaching philosphies. I thank all of the coaches on this site for any input that they have offered and I just want you all to know that I will be picking your brains in the near future as we prepare to make our run at the playoffs. By the way, does anyone have any advice on defending the wishbone option from the 4-4 or the 5-3? These are the two defenses that we have been running that we have had the most success out of. The team we play this week is based out of this formation. The also run a 2X2 set, still trying to run the ball. They are not a very good passing team, they have a kid (best around here, legit D1 athlete)that they line up at QB, TB, FS, that is the real deal(runs the option well)...They also have another back that they use to run the dives. I need some help by tomorrow if possible. I appreciate any help that anyone can offer. Yo can reply here or email me at dmitch7@hotmail.com. Again thanks..
I thought that you said the OKIE DOG PINCH that we discussed did well for you against the team you just played that ran the bone? Your only breakdowns occured with it when the kids didn't take care of their assignments is what I understood you to say. No problem from me, just thought we had solved that problem.

We have been a 5-3, 4-4 team all season...I've been reading about the ODP today at the forum, but I haven't played that wishbone team yet...I play them this week and I play a team that runs invert on next week, well they run some plays out of it...I need all that I can get....Is there one defense that will work for both? I think that I could defend either out of our base defense, but I think that we might be left weak in some areas...
The KEY to the Okie Dog Pinch is having the EMOL collision the near back to his side. Once that is disrupted, you put a lot of pressure on the QB. The near back goes away..collision QB......
Happy are those who dreams dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.
I need to get a better understanding of the defense. Can someone get me a copy of the ODP? I need a handout or something that I can distribute to my staff and players. Thanks coaches for all the help. The coach of this team has already gone to the media talking about what they are going to do to us so we can't afford to lose this one...They are very cocky...
