Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
If they give you Pro into the boundary won't you be weak to the boundary or do you use the boundary as a defender? To the field vs. Pro you will have a drop end and SS to the same side?
I haven't run these defenses in many years. What I am saying is the way the great George Hill ran it at Ohio St (under Woody) - the philosophy was DEFEND THE FIELD FIRST!
You wouldn't ALWAYS angle in the first place. They played some "straight", some "pinch" on both sides, etc. It was not "angle every down"! PLUS - in today's football, you would not line up in Cover 3 as much as they did back there anyway! Teams play many things (QUARTER-QUARTER/HALF, ETC.).
Did I send you George Hill's option packet? He talks about declaring the S/S in there.
In Cover 3/Monster, Cover 2, or Cover 4 - I WOULD DROP THE END TO THE ANGLE (since he is the DROP end in the BASE package).
(Depending on the EXACT coverage) - Just make sure you have FOUR rushers - (the Nose, both DT's & 1 DE) spaced so there are 2 rushers EACH side, with an Inside AND Outside pass rush lane responsibility to EACH side.
I would talk with a member of U. Michigan's Def. Staff, since thet slanted & angled so much in the 70's, 80's, & 90's. They were the best at it.
Hos, with directions(slants/angles)we tag the olb away form the slant as our Rush End...and the olb to the direction becomes our Read...The Read will be the xtra fitter versus run, and the extra dropper versus pass.....The Backers will rotate their drops(if their is a pocket pass) away from the direction(away from the read olb).....As 4 the curl area, if the offense is going to attack this window they will do so by over spliting the receiver...when this occurs, our corners will adjust to and Ink(inside eye)alignment on the receiver...Because the offense is setting us up to use our zone alignments against us(as good offense will do)....If we were in Man coverage, and the splits were reduced, we would loosen and play what came to us....Remember it's Chess not Checkers.....
You got it...if he is in a 60, he has to read the TE...if in a 90 he can tilt and get a peek at the guard....2 be Honest, we are on the move so often, it's a suprise to the offense when we do decide 2 read.....
In a "5-2 COVER 3" - here are the adjustments. I got out of this defense BECAUSE if they come out & line up so that you declare strength left - then they SHIFT so the strength is now right - then they MOTION so the strength is now left again. WE do this - so do MANY teams we play! The defense looks like a "Chinese Fire Drill".
In the above scenario - You are FORCED to change the CALL 3 times (including the original call).
Lets just look at ONE change of strength, LET ALONE 2 or 3!!!
If the offense changes strength & becomes HEAVY right (for EXAMPLE: the FB shifts to offset to the defense's right, THEN, the Flanker motions across to the defense's right) - here are the changes:
LE becomes a drop end rather than a contain rush end
LT becomes a contain pass rusher rather than an inside pass rusher
NOSE's pass rush lane changes from right to LEFT (in Cover 3 he must rush opposite the secondary call)
RT becomes an inside pass rusher rather than a contain pass rusher.
RE becomes a contain pass rusher rather than a drop end.
S/S must either go OVER with the change of strength, OR, replace the F/S in MOF - while F/S must invert down right. THIS PRESENTS A MAJOR PROBLEM BECAUSE IT IS TOO FAR FOR THE S/S TO RUN TO GET OVER (THEN HE MAY HAVE TO CHANGE SIDES AGAIN), AND THE F/S IF HE DOES HAVE TO INVERT DOWN IF THERE IS A WR THAT SIDE IS NOT USE TO THE POWER SWEEP RUN SUPPORT THAT THE S/S IS!
I am SURE others will say they have a simpler way to do it (BUT IS IT SOUND?), more power to them. Above is how ALL great "5-2" teams I ever met did it, & it is too damned much for High School. We LOVE to see 5-2 Cover 3. Any FORM OF 5-2 (shade or not) IS VULNERABLE TO 2 TE'S BECAUSE 7 GUYS HAVE 8 GAPS TO DEFEND!
Do not wish to discuss any "WHAT IF'S" except by phone. I have a "typer's cramp" in my right arm all ready! Any of you guys who plan to get "comfortable" in this defense had better get ready for ALL THAT (don't say "we don't see that", because once you try to make a living out of this defense, YOU WILL)!

PS: A 4-3 Under-Shade gives you the SAME look as a 5-2 SHADE/EAGLE, & is much easier to play. The 4-4 gives you the SAME PASS COVERAGE (3 deep zone/4 under/4 rush) & is by FAR the easiest of ALL to play. THE PASS COVERAGES ON ALL OF THESE IS IDENTICAL IN COVER 3!
Also with the motions-if we see trips we go cover 3 or 1/4 1/4 1/2-now before you say that wont work Ohio State is the same way. We got our defense from them but we run the 50 front. Our kids know if we get trips loose then we ply a1/4 1/4 1/2 and if it's trey then it's cover 3. The LB neve move it's only the safeties. I am pretty sure OSU is knowledgable enough to help us in this department. One othe thing if a high school offense can motion that much prior to a snap bring them on.....I will move my D that much as well. Oneback you always say you can't give a Q the same look twice...thank you for doing that for me with your motions. Remember trips C3 or the 1/4 coverage. Oh, if my DE are on the LOS then they are coming and we use our LB.
If the offense changes strength & becomes HEAVY right (for EXAMPLE: the FB shifts to offset to the defense's right, THEN, the Flanker motions across to the defense's right) - here are the changes:

again if your O has this much to do to get me out of my defense....good for me! keep moving your men and running the all over, i will just sit and wait until your done and then play cover 3! again i will not drop my de's when they are walked up, if you send out 4 well i have a pretty good shot at getting you, if send out 5 even better. oh i know you will beat me with your hitch!
IC, Idealy you may be correct, but in Reality you may be wrong about bringing the same 5 down after down..and just simply playing a Plain Jane 3 deep coverage behind it....Are your Jimmies and Joes that much better than your opponents?:light;
IC - A pre-rotated 5-2 Cover 3 (nverted or "Monstered") is the following (therin lies it's weakneses):
#1 It is UNBALANCED
#2 It "SHOWS" it's intentions pre-snap.
I played a 5-2 Cover 3 for 25 years, & on 3 levels (HS/COLLEGE/PRO). If you play this defense - you had BETTER have answers to the situation I described (ADJUSTMENT-WISE).
Many coaches on this site have played FOR, and played AGAINST me. They can verify that it SIMPLE for us to come up with strength one way - shift the strength the other way, & change the strength AGAIN with motion. We practice this from DAY-1, & it is the BASIS of our offense. Therefore, we can do this with NO TROUBLE. It is the DEFENSE that has it's work cut out for it! The defensive adjustments I described ARE SOUND, & WILL WORK - but they are HARD AS HELL to execute in HS ball!! You can get the SAME COVERAGE without moving ANYBODY in a 4-4/cOVER 3. Lou Holtz wrote a GREAT article (which I have) about WHY he dropped the "50" - because of how HARD it was to adjust. Remember - Holtz tried using that as HFC with the JETS & said he had trouble making the required "adjustments" in NFL AND College !
Here is what the defense has to be prepared for (our kids begin doing this on the 9th grade level, & continue in the system for 4 years). iN PRACTICE - OUR DEFENSE (WITH EQUAL PERSONNEL) could never stop our offense (the defense was never ready at the snap). This is from our offensive playbook, & is the BASIS for our system: This is WHY we like to see "5-2/Cover 3":
SHIFTING IS A BIG PART OF THE OFFENSE: HERE IS THE BASIC “SHIFT” TERMINOLOGY:
#1 “SHIFT” = H & RB
#2 “STEM” = Y & RB
#3 “SHAFT” = H, Y, & RB
#4 “POP” = WR’s LINE UP TIGHT & SHIFT OUT
#5 “SINK” = WR’s LINE UP WIDE & SHIFT IN
#6 “EXPLODE” = ALL 5 ELIGIBLES SHIFT (A COMBO OF “SHAFT” & EITHER “POP” OR “SINK”).
SHIFTING & MOTIONING TO NUMEROUS “FINISHED FORMATIONS” IS A MAJOR PART OF THE OFFENSE! NOTE: IF NOT SHIFTING OR GOING IN MOTION – GO ON A VERY QUICK COUNT!!!!!
MOTION TEMINOLOGY
MOTION TOWARDS FORMATION CALL:
Z = ZOOM
TE = FLY
HB = MOTION
X = OX
MOTION AWAY FROM FORMATION CALL:
Z = ZING
TE = LEAP
HB = WHIZ
X = X-IT
MOTION TOWARDS BALL & RETURN:
Z = FAKE ZOOM
TE = FAKE FLY
HB = FAKE WHIZ OR FAKE MOTION
X = FAKE OX OR FAKE X-IT
NOTE: “H” IN SHORT MOTION TO BLOCK INSIDE = BANG!
“MOVEMENT”
MOVEMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR TOTAL OFFENSIVE SYSTEM.
THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS FOR MOVEMENT IN OUR OFFENSE; AMONG
THE MOST PROMINENT REASONS ARE:
1. To create a personnel advantage by creating mis-matches on our Receivers or Backs.
2. To create a personnel advantage by effecting changes in run support and force responsibilities.
3. To create secondary movement in an effort to better enable our Quarterback to recognize coverage.
4. To get our personnel in better position to execute their given assignment.
5. To create problems for the defense in Man under coverages when attempting to hold or bump Receivers at the line of scrimmage.
6. To create an opportunity for indecision, confusion, and/or mis-alignment by the secondary.
7. To cause movement on the part of the Defense in an effort to realign their personnel with the coverage calls and changes and not allow them to set themselves and react to familiar offensive patterns. Make the Defense “play on the move”.
8. To force opponents to spend practice time and effort on adjusting to movement patterns rather than improving defensive skills and schemes.
9. To create a visual complexity to the defense, yet be able to run the same basic plays from a variety of looks.
PS: In a GREAT article WHICH i HAVE - written by Tom Olividati ("DC" under Shula at Miami, & one of the best ever) - he talked about the BEST way to defend each of the MAJOR passing game CONCEPTS in the NFL. Cover 3 was NOT listed vs. ANY of these as being the "best way to get things done":
1. Vs Horizontal Stretch (3 vs 2 or 2 vs 1 underneath) = Cover 2 (Cover 3 is VERY WEAK vs this)
2. Vs Vertical Stretch (3 vs 2 or 2 vs 1 long to short) = Cover 1
3. Vs 4 Verticals - Cover 4 (Cover 3 is VERY WEAK VS THIS)
4. Vs. Play Action - Cover 0/Blitz
There was more, but this is the "gist" of the thesis!
ALSO: In the days we played 5-2 Cover 3 - it would NOT hold up vs the Flexbone "Triple" teams, NOR the Delaware Wing-T (we could not stop the "waggle" backside, among OTHER THINGS!
GOOD DRILL for teams that use a 5-2 with Pre-Rotated 3 Deep Zone: Get out a pencil & LOTS of paper & work out your adjustments to the following:
“SCATTER” (THIS “BLOWS THE MIND” OF MANY DEFENSES)
CALL FORMATION/MOTION (IF NEEDED)/PLAY - IN HUDDLE. AFTER BREAKING THE HUDDLE - LINE UP IN “SCATTER” & MAKE A QUICK SHIFT TO THE FINISHED FORMATION BEFORE DEFENSE CAN GET SET!
