Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Guys,
Being triple option coaches we all would agree that the triple option (either inside or outside veer, and midline) is the best play in football; but over the years some of our biggest gains have come off of load schemes (blocking either the dive read or the pitch read rather than reading them). I can recall watching the near halfback in the old true wishbone teams blocking the pitch key and this is where those Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas wishbone Q's often had their biggest gains. I would like to solicit information on various load schemes that coaches use especially out of flexbone( not referring to the Navy load scheme where the slot will block the playside LB). Discuss scheme, technique, and and how to teach and practice.
SAME AS ON THE OSV. BUT REMEMBER JOHN, THAT IF YOU WANT IT TO BE SUCCESSSFUL HAVE HIM ATTACK DOWNHILL AS IN THE ISV/OSV AND NOT PARALLEL TO THE LOS. HE MUST FOLLOW THE OL SURGE! To come down the LOS PARALLEL is to invite penetration and the forcing of your QB away from the direction he needs to be going.

Jerry,
Thanks, I also have another question concerning OL depth off the ball. Last year we had our OG's and OT's align with their toes even with our OC's heels. My question is, should we crowd the ball as much as legally possible? We will be running midline, ISV and OSV which all hit VERY fast. So, am I correct in assuming that it would be wise to crowd the LOS which would allow our OLmen to get to the defenders as fast as possible?

I'm sure that was for Coach Easton but to give my two cents on this one. indeed take as much of the football as possible so that you get your OL attached as fast as possible. to the down defenders. Coach Campbell

What should our landmark be when lining up? Last year we had our OG's and OT's align with their toes even with our OC's heels. Maybe have our OG's align with their toes even with our OC's instep? That should get them about as close to the LOS as legally possible.
You run the option and zone game. In the option game, you crowd the LOS. The recommendation for the zone game is to set off the ball, so how do your teams handle it? Do you have your OL alter the position on or off the ball for the option and zone runs? If so, what keywords do you use while teaching it to help them understand? I would assume the word Option tells them to load up at the LOS, Inside or Outside tells them to set off the ball.

My response, I'm sure, is going to be a little bit unorthodox to conventional thinking but that is just me. I never was one to follw the crowd in a lot of aspects of our game. Being always concerned ABOUT SETTING TENDENCIES, I would not stagger our depth at the LOS FOR ANY REASON. If you are gong to run the veer and you crowd the line, then you are going to run a zone play and you sit back deeper, to me that is readily discernable to any sharp line backer or DLM. So, the way I always run the option was to align the same exact way every time, no matter what the play was, be it an inside veer or outside veer or whatever. NOW, with that said, if your ZONE blocking we would crowd if we were going straight ahead and back if we were going wide, OUT OF NECESSITY BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF THE BLOCKS(having to "take over" a DLM, to create lateral movement, etc.) Just my way as always.

I agree, it seems like it would be an easy read for the D and introduce more complexity into what the big fellas have to remember to do. I want to add some option this year but don't want to let go of the zone game either.
How about this - when running option out of the gun should the OL be crowding the ball or off a bit since it doesn't hit the LOS as quick as the traditional veer from under center?

The ISV is basically a "zone scheme", you are still reaching and cutting off the backside, therefore, OL depth is important. You want to be working downhill on reach and cut-off blocks not just reaching laterally
At Ga. Southern, out OL toes were at the heels of the center. We never crowded the ball....we wanted downhill momentum.
Happy are those who dreams dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.
In high school ball, always had the guys align with their helmets on the center's belt buckle. In pro minor league ball, we aligned as Deac did at Georgia Southern, toes to the center's heel. With HS level players it is always a good practice to do all you can to help them avoid the common mistake of aligning off sides, thus my practice of aligning a bit deper at that level.

A coach on another site asked what the difference was between load and lead option. Here is what I told him.
"I believe many coaches are refferring to the same play when they speak of load/lead option, so that part of it is semantics. As for an actual difference, it lies in the blocking scheme and who is being read for pitch. I have seen lead option ran where the diveback would kickout "lead" block the EMOLOS."
Would you guys consider that to be an accurate statement?
Another question: Would you guys read a 7 tech. DE for pitch on the load option or would you block him with TE and read next outside defender for pitch? Personally, I can't see any reason not to read the 7 tech. and have TE loop outside and then head to ILB. What do ya guys think?
