Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
for the corners, they play quarters just like cover 3 by keeping 21 people inside them and not letting anyone outside of them or behind them, the safeties will play quarters just like cover 2 by backpedaling and keeping everything in front. They also watch for any inside route so that they can break on it. The main thing about quarter coverage is not to try to chase a receiver. This is zone coverage and if you have a receiver crossing in front of you , alert the DB next to you.
If you are running quarters you are probably route reading. Correct? If not quick quarters route reads. Corners-Read #1 to #2, i.e. #1 goes inside look to #2 on an out route, no route continue to squeeze zone DON'T COVER GRASS SS & FS- Read #2 to #1, i.e. #2 goes out look to #1 on an inside route, you can also rob the curl and have the Corner take the out and up SLB & WLB- Read #2 to #1, i.e. collision #2 on any vert passing him off at 10yds working to next inside route This is a good concept one that allows you to cover receivers and not grass.
Assuming you are playing quarters the way Run_The_Ball explained, I have used very few drills to teach keys and reads. I have generally taught this through constant emphasis and coaching throughout 7 on 7 and team and in film study. However, these key points may be of some help:
1. In reading the UCL (Uncovered Lineman) and/or the EML (End Man on the LOS), the safety should "look for" a pass set by the lineman. If he sees this he can immediately initiate his sloe backpedal and throw his eyes to #2. If he see anything else, he should punch downhill in the direction of flow and become a primary run support player. I constantly emphasize "no false steps" with run keys by the UCL/EML - I don't want to see them with my LB's so why accept them with DB's?
2. After pass recognition, discourage the safety from initiating a hard backpedal - teach him to walk out and gain momentum as #2 climbs vertical.
3. After pass recognition, look for the safeties eyes to immediatel go to #2. If he delays and #2 has either ran a drag or an arrow, he will be late getting to #1 (run with the post and drive on the curl).
