Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I'm in Canada and kind of being thrown into the fire next year running the defense for the junior varsity team. What I'm looking for is suggestions on for a defense to run that won't be overly difficult to impliment.
I'll likely have a mostly small team, many of whom have probobly never touched a football before (though some will have played youth football)
There is very little passing in most of our games, with most offenses focusing on sweeps, counters, and option plays.
A 5-3-3 meets the description of what you are looking for, but of COURSE - you have to add a twelvth man SOMEWHERE, & I have no IDEA of where that would be! Probably an erxtra DB!
I agree with ONEBACK, the 5-3 is the best run stopper ever devised in my book and that is saying something with all the modern defenses!
My choice for the 12th man would to be put him on the line as you say you don't see much passing. Somebody else for the offense to have to block! Bills suggestion of making him a DB has merit in that I guess you can use him as a rover type back and send him from all different spots and angles, hopefully would end up as a free runner lots of times. Just my thoughts.

I'll take a look at the 5-3. Do you know of any good resources off the top of your heads to look into for implimenting that defense?
As for the 12th man, often times it seems as though the 12th man is an additional safety or linebacker, I'm not sure how that'd work with this particular defence.
Again... email me ASAP... and let me know where you're located (you never know!)
Usually you're looking at either a 4 or 5 shell defensive backfield. The 4 man set you're pretty familiar with
I'd recommend a 4-4 Defense - It's pretty common and a good base - and you've got 2 safeties in behind it. Alot of CFL pro's are playing with the odd stack defense. I'll sketch it out the 4-4 for you:
OLB's: Outside Shoulder of TE - responsible for contain - "Ball Comes - You Come" "Ball Drops - You Drop (flat)" ... "Ball Away...Stay" (reverse/Counter). If there's no TE ... He covers down on #2
ILB's: Stacked over the DT's who are in a 2 tech... although you can play with a 1&3tech deal.
DE's: Slight outside shade on the OT Control C gap... squeeze B
DT's: prefer a 2 tech.... and 2 gap them... let the LB's make the plays.
With the DB's we usually play cover 4 or 3.... Cov 3 the safety to flow will invert HARD into the Flats to fill for the OLB blitzing.. backside safety has middle 3rd.
Again... EMAIL ME. I'll try and get you some resources DVD's, Playbooks, Clinic Notes.
