Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Playing a team that likes to throw in some Bear as a changeup from their 4-3 Cov8 for pressure. I'm looking for a check. I really only want one, B/C we may only see this 3-4 times the entire game. Right now I'm looking at weakside counter, strongside power, and 3-step Hitch as the possibilities. What other option may be more effective, or which one of the above jumps out at you? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the responses. I see how weakside option would be a good choice, but we don't do any option game at the present, so I was looking for something a little less time intensive. I should've said that in my first post, as I know a lot of people like to run option weak vs. Bear.
Weakside counter - PST, PSG, and Center must all Gap down with everyone covered. BSG would trap and I would probably move the FB strong and let him wrap instead of the BST. I would leave him to help the C on the backside 3. My concern is our Left Tackle may not be able to wash that 3 down, so right now this is my least favorite option of the three I mentioned.
I'm really leaning towards strongside Power, why do you not like it Coach Scott? Here is how I'm thinking of blocking it, if it makes any difference.
Y - Release outside to Sam, This will widen $
PST - Gap Down
PSG - Gap Down
C - Backside
BSG - Wrap to PSLB
BST - Scoop to Will
FB - Kick $
Comet - if you wish to email me at: billmountjoy@yahoo.com - I can send you a game plan we used with success over the years vs. the Bears 46. It is based upon what the Redskins did with great success vs. Buddy Ryan in 1987.
sort of superfluous now that you say you don't have any option game to speak of, but forgot to mention
a very important point on my suggestion of a counter option to the back side. ANY TIME YOU RUN A COUNTER OPTION AWAY FROM A TE, YOU ARE ENDANGERING YOUR QB SERIOUSLY. That is why we always emphasize THINK QUICK PITCH to our QB on ANY OPTION GOING AWAY FROM THE TE.
I thought we had to sugggest a running play and that is why I gave you my choice. But, shoot, passing is the way to go without a doubt and that of the three step game as Bill mentioned.

I do not think your BST will get to Will. The FB or OG will give Will a true read to flow strong-side immediately.
Also, usually, one or more or of: M, S and $ will blitzing at or near your intended point of attack.
I recommend running double TE formations vs. this front. I have always felt this will give you good angles and numbers to run B or C gap. In two back sets Iso and Wall or Power plays have been effective. In one back double tight. Veer and Veer option keepers have worked as well. We run the fly offense so we usually will have a sweep threat with a motion guy on most running plays. If you can throw the ball I think the bear defense generally struggle to defend basic curl/flat combinations off the three step drop.
The exerpt below is from a Sports Illustrated article about Super Bowl XXII Dernver was using the "Bears 46" - Washington ran the Counter 26 times for 204 yds & 3 TD's:
Smith's 58-yard TD put Washington ahead 21-10, and the Broncos were in shock. On the sideline the Redskins linemen were telling Bugel to keep calling the Counter. "The Broncos were playing a variety of Buddy Ryan's Bear defense, where they line up men over both guards and the center," said Bugel. "So we went to a counterattack. If you hit it right against that defense, you can break something big."
We only have Pro, Twins, Slot at this time with 21 personnel. We almost always align in the I, as the sweep is our #1 play, and we always want the defense to have to play it.
We run quite a bit of double tite, and I know this will put Bear in a bind. However, I don't anticipate seeing this more than 6-8 times, so I just want a reliable check when they do jump into it. If this was their base front I would definetly be in double tite the majority of the game.
We are going to check to the Power-O. Coach Mountjoy has sold me on it, and I appreciate the help. I know we will have a hard time getting to the backside lb'er, Coach Scott, but he's going to have to run through some trash to get to the playside C-gap. 4-5 yards with the possibility of breaking a big one is acceptable to me.
They play Cover 1 behind it, so we won't check out of a pass. In fact, I think I'm going to let my QB and WR's sight adjust the C's and let them throw the stop if they are 8+ yards off.
One coaching point that may help: The play will go much better if the pulling OG (wrapper) can block the MLB OUTSIDE-IN. This will avoid the trouble of cutting back into the WLB. You may consider motion to twins if you do it this way, to take the corner out of the equation (assuming they are a corner over team).
You may consider telling the back-side OT what you want him to do if he cannot cut off the WLB. Either continue on to the safety or drive WLB past the hole. If you choose the latter, you HB may be able to cut it back behind both LBs for a big play if the MLB get outside leverage on the pulling OG.
Just my two cents. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.
The Counter trey is very effective on the weakside vs. the 46. You need two lead blockers to gain an advantage and the counter trey does that. I did not know that Denver was in a 46 during that Super Bowl. Nobody ran the counter trey better than the Redskin OL with Jacoby, May, Bostic, Schlereth, and Donny Warren blocking.

In a 3x1 set (like our "TE TRIPS) you have a numbers advantage vs the basic "Bears 46/Cover 1" IF you go to the SE side on the Counter. They are a man short!
So we work on checking vs. the Bear front all week, and don't see it one time last night. Typical!!!
Anyway, we won 29-3. We looked sluggish, but had 347 yards of offense. 1-0 is always good. Keep ready, b/c I will be picking y'alls brains all the way to December(I hope we are still going that deep).
Bill's comments about having the bear outnumbered on the backside is the exact reason we teach QB's to PICK A SIDE when running the option (take the side to run to that you have the numbers advantage).
That's all right you didn't see what you had prepared for all week, in my book, because you HAD A PLAN AND WERE WELL PREPARED FOR IT HAD YOU SEEN IT.
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE WIN!!! Always nice to start off with a win. Keep the momentum going now and keep working smarter each week, coach towards perfection and GATA. (GET AFTER THEIR A..)

There is no doubt that the power/counter series is the best running game to attack the bear front. I also like some kind of slide or zone pass protection so you can give the center help against the nose. You also take away the ability for them to stunt linemen or have linebackers shoot the a-gap between the nose and the center when you use a slide/zone pass protection.
Those are the two ideas that I would use against a bear front. When passing, use some kind of zone/slide pass protection and when running, use the power/counter series.
Run the rocket and jet. The Bear only has 1 outside the tackle and you do not have to block a 4 tech in, therefore the double eagle is not a problem. The nub rocket is a killer and then once they adjust with a wide 1 you can ICE and base them to death. If they bring the jack downhill the 4 vertical will kill them. Finally, we played a team that ran this defense and we scored on counter and Ice W whenever we wanted to. I wish all of the teams I see ran this defense and the other defense is the odd stack. Boy these are easy to run on.
Good Luck
