Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Your ends should crash down with the DE. the linebacker should read G to near back. As the RB crosses the QBs face, the QB becomes nearback and he should slow play and not run after the RB. Instead, he should key QB and fit over the crashing DE.
The high safety should fit directly off tackle and outside the ILB who is fitting over the crashing DE. You need to have two on QB if he is a runner.
Any other ideas would be interesting.
Great topic!!!!!
If you can "stop the run", the offense becomes predictable.
MY PHILOSOPHY HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO SMACK THE QB ON EVERY PLAY POSSIBLE! GET HIM LOOKING TO GET HIT AND PRETTY SOON HE WILL START LOOKING FOR THE HIT FIRST INSTEAD OF MAKING HIS READS! WEAR HIM OUT!!!

My quick answer is dictate who carries the ball! If you slam the BS DE (Away from where the RB aligns) you can take the ball out of the RB's hands. If you want him to get the ball run your BS DE up the field. Our philosophy is that the QB can not kill us running the ball so let him run. Make the read obvious and then tackle the QB who is running instead of the RB.
I was with Ron Vanderlinden, Linebackers' Coach at Penn State twice this spring. He told me that they destory the zone read with the UNDER front, which can be run with one or two high safeties. The under front destroys the blocking combinations to both sides and outnumbers people in spots where they NEED to go with the ball. Coach Vanderlinden said that it is vital to have a 3 technique TO the offset back in the shotgun.

Just make sure that the Will, 3, and 5 tech. are aligned to the offset back. I sincerely apologize for yesterday's post... the 3 tech. is aligned TO the side of the offset running back.

I've heard that yo should align the 3 tech lineman (B gap) player away from the off set back to force the RB to run inside (A gap). Where as if you have a 2 tech (A gap) player away then it gives him a bigger hole to cut through.
What does do you guys think?
Change up the DE to the 2 tech side to run the circle on the down block, or shuffle and key the QB.
Why add any new teaching. Play it the same as defending the combination of inside-outside veer. Force always has pitch.(if 2 back scheme) For us, most of the time that is the Outside Backer, could be the DE if we are blitzing with Outside Backer and Jetting DE up the field.
DE closes on down read or Outside Backer crashes gap, collision the mesh but tackle the dive back. FSLB scrapes over the top and takes QB. Work hard on reaction, rip tech and angle of FSLB to defeat tackles block.
Only difference is for Inside Backers to cross key RB's after reading Guard if you get the 2 back scheme.

I tend to agree with Coach Cella & Coach Vanderlinden that, if you only have a 3 tech. to one side, it should be TO the side of the offset RB.

As I understand it, the QB will read the DE TO the side of the off-set RB (the weak 5 tech. above). The 5 tech. will head upfield to force a give by the QB. The OC and SG will zone the 1 tech. to the MLB. The MLB will fill the strong B gap, forcing the RB to cut back weak. The weak OG and OT will zone the weak 3 and WLB. WLB will fill the weak A, forcing the OT to stay on the 3 tech. The RB will have to bend it back around to the weak C. By that time, your weak DE (5 tech.) can be sure that it was a give and fold back inside on the RB. Hopefully, others are getting off their blocks and/ or you have secondary support by then to help out as well. Obviously, the 3 tech. must feel the block form the OT and fight it to minimize the seam for the RB. This also is a very awkward path for the RB, coming across the midline to mesh and then back across to cutback.
Coach Cella, or anyone, please comment.

Coach Cella,
Great explanation illustration on why the 3 tech should be to the RB’s side. Would that be the same for a double twins gun Zone read team. (10 2x2)?
Thanks,

Harry73,
I will not presume to speak for Coach Cella but, IMO, it is the same vs. 2x2:

Just apply the same explanation but without the TE and SLB.

Another thing you can do is slant your tackles away from the the side of the RB. it will be very tough to keep that OG on the side of the RB out of the backfield with the Center zoning the other DT. May want to slide his alignment to a head up 2 on the OG to make it tougher. Seems like a nice change up for what was mentioned above.
