Hi coaches,
I've been reading the board over the past week or so. What a great resource for any coach to be able to come here and find just about whatever you need. And the #1 resource of this forum, of course, are the coaches themselves.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself:
Having spent over 8 years on active duty in the Navy, coaching is not exactly an easy thing to arrange. Until this year, my experience was limited to coaching the NROTC flag football team. ;-)
The Upside:
Anyways, after trying for three years to arrange my schedule to allow me to coach, I was successful this year in working things out. I'm currently assisting at the 8th grade level of a program that went to the state semi-finals last year (Class AAAA in PA). It's a start! I'm having a blast and every day of practice is a great learning experience.
We have five coaches total, although only three get paid. I'm one of the two volunteers, but for this experience I don't mind at all. As we all generally coach some aspect on both sides of the ball, I'm happy to have some of my knowledge being taught to these kids. I might even get to install a couple plays of my own this week. ;-)
The Downside:
I'm getting out of the Navy after New Year's, and currently job hunting at the moment. While I hope being able to coach is still a possibility next year, there aren't many jobs outside of teaching that are flexible enough to allow you to do that. But there's always hope.
Whether I'm on the sidelines next year or not, I'll keep this site bookmarked for all the great information and great coaches...here's hoping I can contribute my own bit to this great resource for us all.
